#AuthorAMA: What was the inspiration for writing your recent short story, A Father’s Protection?

Many of you know I am taking part in a combo #AMA (Ask Me Anything) under the category #DesignAMA and #AuthorAMA. I am answering questions related to my cover design/graphic design and my journey as an indie author. Today I am sharing an awesome question about my recent publication, “A Father’s Protection”. Hope you will enjoy the response as I enjoyed writing it.

What was the inspiration for writing your recent short story, A Father’s Protection? How long did it take you to write it?

The inspiration for “A Father’s Protection” came from my WIP, Tarzinëa. Several kingdoms within this series have gone beyond expectation and the plan is to give them spin-offs tales of their own. The kingdoms whom make up Tarzinëa are: Tarza (the human realm), Vladïmir (the Elven Kingdom), Fôndura (the realm of magic users), Mountains of Tõrin (the Kingdom of Dwarves) and the Forest of Ferrês (the realm of beasts). Each kingdom has several stand out characters I will create stories around, novellas or their own book series.

DarkDeath the protagonist in this story is the king of beasts and he plays a key role in the war that will touch all kingdoms throughout the book series. As I was creating these characters, I would compile flash fiction stories for my blog to get in the heads of the important characters. This process allowed me to understand their motives, thinking process and what matters most to them. I plan to put these flash fiction tales back on my blog here in the next few weeks. I had my blog on Wix.com first and moved over to WordPress.

Throughout this writing process I stumbled across a story idea that brought a softer side to DarkDeath. It also allowed me to showcase two of my favorite pups of SnowFire and DarkDeath’s that one day I want to create children stories around. His pups are all different which several will appear throughout the book series or stories.

It has been 3,000 years since the fall of the Empire. In this time Vladïmir has closed its doors to the world. The creatures of Ferrês have disappeared from the world and became myths in story books. However, through the use of the Tales of Ferrês story series we will look within the forbidden forest and see times in both past, present and future. I plan to do stories featuring characters from other kingdoms within this world creation but for right now I plan to showcase the mysterious kyres and the power these creatures possess.

I plan to publish the second installment in the Tales of Ferrês series mid-September. In this story Blackmoon will appear with a dragon named Meisha and her elven ryder Blake in “An Elf, A Dragon and a God’s Intervention”.

How long did it take me to write this story? Hmmm… I believe once the story took root in my head I accomplished it in under two hours. I didn’t do an outline or planning for this story it created itself. You can say DarkDeath took over and had a story to tell, I was just along for the ride.

#WIP Monday – The Beginning

Heya,

Today is my first post for my blog  feature, #WIP Mondays. These posts will consist of content around #WIP. I am working on two big ones right now. The first is “Tarzinëa: Rise of the Vardin”, this is just the working title. My second work is “The Celestial One” (TCO), this is planned to be a serial series.

The plan is to write Tarzinëa as I work on the outline for TCO. I had this one outlined in a book format but now I plan to change things over to a serial outline. TCO, I plan to start writing at the beginning of the year as I finish up book one of Tarzinëa.

Writing Goals for this week:

  • Write 10k in “Tarzinëa, Rise of the Vardin” – this will be a big goal for myself since I struggle with keeping on track. The big issue is going from not writing to writing, however this is going to be interesting.
  • Work out TCO’s serial outline – I am hoping to have at least the first two episodes outlined by this time next week.
  • World/Character Development – I need to get my notes and world/characters over into scrivener this week for the Legendary Heroes Saga. This way I can have everything in one location.

***Big Design Goal: I plan to begin working on my next ebook cover. The short story is “An Elf, A Dragon and a God’s Intervention” it will be a part of the Tales of Ferrês short story collection.

What’s New

This weekend I created a patreon page to offer special perks to patrons that subscribe to help with my journey into print. I have three tiers: Heroes ($2 or more a month), Vardin Knights ($5 or more a month) and Dragon Ryders ($25 or more a month). The tier you join will depend on the special perks and rewards you receive.

The reason I chose to create a patreon page is to help with the offset cost of publication and promotion. I plan to share special content only to those that participate as a patron to help earn their support. If you are interested in becoming a patron and want to help support me as an author you can join for as little as $2 a month by clicking here.

If you do wish to help with my journey into print but financially can’t afford the patron option, I have two other ways you can assist. I plan on putting together a list of beta readers for both, TCO and the Legendary Heroes Saga WIPs. If you would be interested in becoming a beta reader please contact me.

The other option would be to join my street team. Just drop me a message through email at authorkmjenkins@gmail.com or my contact page. This way when I have the group set up I can send you an invite. I plan to have this group created later this week. I will make an announcement on my blog once it goes live.

#AuthorAMA: Different ways to enter the Writing Industry

Yesterday I shared a post from my design blog, KJ Magical Designs, that showcased a question from a #DesignAMA I am taking part in. However, I am not only taking questions on design but also on writing too. I had an interesting one I thought I would source here on my blog.

For a first time author- how many pages would you say is a good start to get published? In the genre of suspense/romance fiction?

It ranges in each genre and by the audience you are trying to target. Ask yourself if you plan to self-publish, if you will market to an agent or hope to get picked up by a publisher. I did digging into this and found a good infographic on one of my favorite sites (Writer’s Digest). This is a good resource to help you learn the ins and outs of the industry with genres. In no way am I saying this is the only way. Several authors I know entered the industry by building a following on their blogs. One of my favorite authors is Renee Scattergood. She entered the industry by publishing serials of her Shadow Stalker Series.

Short description for serial publications -Instead of waiting for the completed book. This style is made up of short works published in a format similar to television episodes. Renee would group episodes with six to eight chapters within each and would publish them within two months of each other. When she finishes that season (a.k.a book), she would bundle them altogether. She used this as a way to build readership while working on other books.

This way entails extra work and a big requirement is to stick to a schedule. I plan to do this myself with a Paranormal Romance I have in the works. If you decide to try something similar to this style, I would suggest researching authors that do this technique.

***Oh, another site that might work to post your chapters on is ChapterBuzz, it helps you grow readers as you progress through your book. There are several sites that can help you with this, it takes research to find the one you think will fit your needs.

Hope this was interesting to everyone that reads this post. I found it interesting and spent more time contemplating my response before I replied. Makes you realize there is no wrong way to enter the written world as an author. It takes time, determination and research. I wish everyone good luck on their journey to the written world and hope you land among the greats.

If I come across more questions, I think are worth sharing here on my author blog I will keep you in the loop. I plan to send out one more post today, featuring author Allison D. Reid. She released her third book in her series, The Wind Rider Chronicles. Her cover is awesome, I am biased, though, since Alfredo Pachicano and myself are the creators. Hope you will stop by to check it out.

Great Wishes,

K.M. Jenkins 🙂
