#IWSG my Publishing Path

This is my first month being a part of the Insecure Writers Support Group. If you haven’t heard of this group before, it is a support group for authors. It is a special place where writers can share their fears, doubts, and concerns, along with triumphs, as they journey down the path to publication. Check out the links at the bottom of this post if you have something to share, or need companionship from fellow authors to keep you writing.

My first time with IWSG.

I have been writing off and on for several years. This last year I went quiet with my writing, due to becoming a mom for the first time. I know this isn’t a real excuse for dropping off the face of the earth for over a year. However, I didn’t just face becoming a mom one but twice at the same time. Yes, I am the mother of twin boys, and I like to say the first year was a real roller coaster ride.

I faced several difficulties during just the first six months. I had severe postpartum depression they hospitalized me twice for, and not only had one big move but two. When June rolled around, I couldn’t believe my boys were one year olds. The nice thing, though, is that they no longer rely on me for everything. This means I get freedom to get back to what I love, writing.

August began my journey back onto the road to writing. I had a system issue with my mac, so I had to do a factory reset. The software I was using for writing in was Storyist to help keep my notes and content organized, sadly I lost the software in the reset. I still have the files, I don’t want to repurchase a software I already bought once. After this I changed over to Scrivener, so August was my catch up month.

I’ve been slaving away trying to get my files switched over I had in word doc format. If that wasn’t enough work, I also did a complete overall on my website, newsletter, and social media platforms. I even re-designed my short story, “A Father’s Protection” cover, and re-published it. Now I completed those blood sucking tasks, I’m hoping now I can get to outlining and writing.

WRITING GOALS FOR SEPTEMBER:

  • Put the final touches on “Tarzinëa: Rise of the Vardin” book 1 in the Legacy of the Silver Ryder series outline.
  • Convert completed outline for “The Celestial One” book 1 in the Demonic Love series into a serial outline.
  • Start writing “The Celestial One” episode one.
  • Re-work, re-write and continue with “Tarzinëa: Rise of the Vardin”.

THIS MONTH’S QUESTION

What publishing path are you considering/did you take, and why?

At this time I have only a short story published and working on my next ones. I decided to self-publish a long time ago. I want to have a say in how my books end up and I would like to get to know my readers. It isn’t about getting rich off my books or becoming famous. I want to do this for the love of writing, reading books and just connecting with people who love books as much as I do.

When I was growing up, especially in high school, books were my escape. I wasn’t an outgoing person anymore. I was closed off, shy, depressed and just had issues being in big crowds of people. The way I experience life and enjoyed my days was reading. Till this day I still don’t live it down, about what my algebra teacher told my mom during a parent teacher conference. “She is a bright student and has great potential,” he began. “I wish I could get her to put those dang books down.”

That is why I want to be a writer/author. I want to have a teacher look at one of my readers’ parent and say those exact words, or something close to it. Creating a world where they feel safe and can escape is my goal. I hope as this journey continues I never forget this goal and if I do, please hit me over the head with one of my books. Trust me, I will appreciate it. 🙂

#WIP Monday – Tarzinëa Pitfall

Last week I made several writing goals and even though I didn’t accomplish them all in their entirety, I am happy with my accomplishments. These were my goals last week:

  1. Get through my #AMA event alive.
  2. Continue transferring over Tarzinëa’s notes into Scrivener.
  3. Work more on The Celestial One’s outline and notes.
  4. If possible write 5k in any WIP.
  5. Need to get the cover designed for my short story, An Elf, A Dragon, and a God’s Intervention.

My #AMA went good I ended with over 40 questions and 92 comments, if I remember right. It was an awesome interaction based interview platform that made things more personable with those submitting questions. This #AMA wasn’t all about my writing this time around but it balanced out with my design questions for my side business, KJ Magical Designs.

Overall, I had a good experience and will try doing more #AMA events again. Not sure what topic I will do next time, perhaps I will do a writing one on my WIP, Tarzinëa.

I think with this post I will go with my success stories first for my goals then do the pitfalls last. You already know how the #AMA went, so lets get the next one out of the way. The next item I accomplished was #5 on the list. I got my cover done for my next short story in the Tales of Ferrês series. I released the cover on Friday in a cover reveal post if you missed it I have it here for you to enjoy.

JENKINS_EDGI_2018_EBOOK_LR

It is an awesome cover it surprised me how easy it was to put this one together compared to “A Father’s Protection”. It was like Blake and Meisha jumped out at me in the images I used.

Since we are on the topic of specific characters, I might as well update you on Tarzinëa. My process of transferring files over into Scrivener was going well, till I realized the chaos I created within my hard drive. I spent an entire day organizing files between my design business and my writing files. It wasn’t an easy task and I am still finding things that need reorganized. I sadly only got through half my files of Tarzinëa and realized I have to do a complete rewrite of my chapters I completed already, along with world notes, timelines, and so much more. I have put writing on hold for this WIP to get things shipshape.

Now my other goals were wishful thinking. I got no real writing done this last week besides rewriting a flash fiction tale featuring King Tyler that I posted on my blog Saturday. You can check it out here. I also wrote individual pieces I featured in my street team. It is a closed group for those interested in taking part in spreading word about my WIP, publications and learning about my worlds as I create them. If you want to join, you can here. I feature legends/myths of Tarzinëa on Tuesdays and sneak peeks on Thursdays. I plan to share deleted scenes from my series, so there will be lots of fun to experience besides helping with the boring promotions. I plan to offer free copies to those interested in receiving ARCs or doing reviews in exchange.

The Celestial One, didn’t get worked on last week. As stated above I was drowning in the mess, I created by not organizing my files right the first time. I have paid the price and will now spend days fixing the mess I created.

Wish me luck with this weeks writing goals, which are:

  1. Finish writing Tarzinëa’s timeline. (This one’s going to be hard because I am stuck on a war background. I can’t decide if I want the enemy to be a dragon that wants to destroy humanity or a sorcerer that takes command of the armies of darkness.
  2. Start rewriting Book 1’s outline for Tarzinëa.
  3. I need to write up a book blurb for “An Elf, A Dragon, and a God’s Intervention,” then get that up on pre-order.
  4. The Celestial One – I am going to aim to write another chapter in the serial.
  5. Need to start thinking about the next story to be featured in the Tales of Ferrês series. (Been playing with the idea of going back to Queen Karigan’s time and share how she met Silvashi. You don’t know him yet but he is the King of Dragons the only silver dragon to ever exist.)

WHAT’S NEW!

This week I have a new cover for my short story, “An Elf, A Dragon, and a God’s Intervention.” I already shared it above so I won’t do it again here.

The next item that is new is my author spotlights page. I changed things up and now will feature Speculative Fiction authors on Fridays. They can write within paranormal romance, fantasy and the sub-genres of fantasy to get featured on my blog. If you believe you would fit within the genre guidelines and would like a spotlight, you can sign-up here.

Either than that I have little of anything else that is new relating to my writing. So I will leave you with a howdy do and wish you an awesome week. Wish me luck mucking through the chaos of the filthy swamp of files.

AN ELF, A DRAGON, AND A GOD’S INTERVENTION ~ COVER REVEAL

Today is the day, I will showcase my cover for the next installment of the Tales of Ferrés short story series. I plan to release this short story on September 20, 2018 which is my dad’s birthday.

My plans for this short story series is to release a new installment each month till I start having other works being released. This way I am getting more of my writing out there and you all get to see parts of this mysterious kingdom that hasn’t had a human within in over 3,000 years.

These stories don’t follow a timeline and each can be considered a stand-a-lone. They don’t have to be read in any particular order, so feel free to have fun with it. If you are wanting sneak peeks beside what my flash fiction tales and short stories provide, please consider joining my street team. It is a group of fans, fellow authors and friends that come together to learn about the worlds I create, promote my books and help me along my journey as an author. Tuesdays I share myths and legends within the Legendary Heroes saga. Thursdays I share sneak peeks from published, coming soon pieces and WIP.

Now that I have rambled on forever here is my cover for “An Elf, A Dragon, and a God’s Intervention.”

#WIP Monday – Awesome Success

Last week I made several writing goals and even though I didn’t accomplish them all in their entirety, I am happy with my accomplishments. These were my goals last week:

  1. Continue to work on transferring Tarzinëa’s characters and world building notes over into Scrivener.
  2. Work on The Celestial One’s first episode outline.
  3. I also have to transfer all The Celestial One’s serial series notes, character sheets and world building information over into their own Scrivener file.
  4. Work on editing flash fiction scenes I plan to showcase on my Patreon page and blog, featuring characters from Tarzinëa. I will feature two a month for free and two to three for patron members only. I will offer this to all Patron Tier Levels, and you can get access to all these for as little as $2 a month.
  5. Need to work on “An Elf, A Dragon, and A God’s Intervention” cover. I am planning to release this mid-September. I spent about three hours alone last night looking at images and I think I might have a concept I want to go with now. Perhaps next week I will have a cover reveal for you all to enjoy.

Now I refreshed your memory, I’ll tell you about my week and what I accomplished. I transferred notes from Tarzinëa and The Celestial One over into Scrivener. I wish I would have gotten more of this done than I did but some is better than none.

The Celestial One’s outline got worked on during this last week. I wrote it out and looked over several chapters I already accomplished. During, this period I edited and rewrote those chapters to work into the new outline. The next thing I knew, two chapters were complete, and I had written over 11k words.

In saying 11k words is awesome for a day of writing for myself. This word count doesn’t include the creation story I wrote for Vladkis and his father Nëyvia, that was close to 3k by itself. Then I wrote notes all over the place and worked on the outline, it was like it possessed me. I’m hoping to do more this week but it will depend on the kids and my event I have going on over on my #AMA platform. My #AMA is going live tomorrow and I’m still scrambling around trying to complete the questions coming in. Just last night I had five left now I’m back up to ten. Wish me luck and feel free to ask questions yourself :).

My Writing Goals for this week:

WHAT’S NEW!

This week I have several things new to share. My first item to share is that I finally go my street team group live over on Facebook. I decided on naming it, GODS AMONG MEN. I decided on this because in several of my works I touch on gods walking among the world of men. It comes more from Tarzinëa though.

In a time long ago when Dragon Ryders ruled supreme, many believe they were born of the gods and sent down to protect the realms of men. They were always to this day referred to as GODS AMONG MEN.

If you are interested in joining my ranks of Dragon Ryders and wish to help promote me as an author and my books you can join here. Members will receive special discounts, insights into the worlds as I publish them, sneak peeks, ARCs, and opportunities to review or become beta readers. Authors who join will in return receive free promotion on my blog for helping me spread the word about my works.

The next item that is new is my updated Patron Tiers over on my Patreon page. I still only have the three tiers: Heroes ($2), Varden Knights ($5), and Dragon Ryders ($10). I changed up the dollar amount listed for the Dragon Ryder tier and updated the benefits I will offer. If you would be interested in becoming a patron and help finance my books into print sign-up here.

I have two more new items left I promise… can you tell I was busy this last week? Starting September 1st I will publish flash fiction tales on my blog, you can find them listed here. I published one already featuring Christophé Flares, the Mage King. I set the schedule up where on the 1st and 15th of every month I’ll release a freebie tale here on my blog. Then on the 10th and 20th I’ll release an exclusive tale for Patron Members only, with a snippet shared on my blog and social media.

Finally, my last new item is these awesome graphics I made to showcase information on my website. I have them linked to the specific pages they represent so click and enjoy.

Overall, I had a productive week and hope to continue into this next one. I will update you next Monday on if I have success or fall on my rump. Wish me luck :).

#AuthorAMA: What themes did you use for your story “A Father’s Protection” and how was your writing process?

I am working my way through questions over on my AMA (Ask Me Anything) platform before it goes live on Tuesday. Yes, I can’t believe it is already here and I still have a dozen questions to answer. I am hoping to get a dent in these tonight before I go to bed, so I don’t have to many when the platform goes live. This being said if you have a question on cover design, being an indie author or on my WIP submit them here. It seems with each passing day more questions appear, I will defiantly be happy to answer them all.

This post highlights a question that got my head turning and made me realize how I need to work on myself as an author. This would be an easy question hands down, however, I realized I needed to do more research into my direction for my world Tarzinëa, and my short story “A Father’s Protection”.

Here is the question:

What themes did you use for your story “A Father’s Protection” and how was your writing process?

This was my response over on the platform:

My writing process for this story differed from my usual. I started out just writing flash fiction tales featuring characters from my WIP series, Tarzinëa. This process was to help me find each character’s true voice and personality. I didn’t realize how this would turn out till DarkDeath took over and his story with Digger came to life.

When I was writing this, I wasn’t thinking about any specific theme; it took on a life of its own. However, your question led me to think about what themes this story falls into, so yes I researched.

A Father’s Protection falls into several common themes that many writers used to further their plot. The themes this story falls into are: love, power, survival, courage and heroism, and war.

I thought I would provide a breakdown for how “A Father’s Protection,” falls into each of the listed themes. These themes will surface regularly throughout the Legendary Heroes Saga, through the publication of short stories, novellas and full-length novels. However, below will comprise the breakdown for this story alone.

LOVE -This story depicts the love between Father and son. DarkDeath isn’t one for showing emotion due to it being weakness amongst the kyres. However, when the time comes to protect one he loves he will move heaven and earth to protect them.

POWER – There has been a longstanding civil war within the forest between the kyres and twin-tailed foxes. The kyres are a dominant creature and have overpowered the twin-tails throughout the history of their land. Due to his deeds on the battlefront DarkDeath became the King of Beasts and why the kyres now are the true leaders over the Forest of Ferrês.
This leads to a power struggle between the two creatures when Digger finds himself inside the twin-tails territory and DarkDeath has to get him out before SilverHide takes him down.

SURVIVAL – This story has a big survival theme, since it centers on Digger going into enemy territory and DarkDeath fighting for both their lives. It is a survival of the fittest for protecting those you love and proving you’re the dominant creature.

COURAGE AND HEROISM – DarkDeath is the hero is this tale and throwing your wellbeing out the window for your pup is my definition of heroism. He is a courageous creature on his own merit, however, DarkDeath doesn’t hesitate when it comes to protecting those he loves. It takes a lot of courage to blast into enemy territory and take a on twin-tail without a second thought, especially when he can get overrun my the deceitful beasts without notice.

WAR – This tale focuses on the bond of Father and son as stated above, however it is more a battle scene than anything.

If you have any questions related to writing, my published works, WIP or the craft of designing covers head over here to submit your questions. I will feature questions here or on my design blog, I believe will be appropriate for my audience.

#AuthorAMA: How did you become interested in writing about the paranormal?

Today I am working through questions again on my #AuthorAMA scheduled to go live August 28, at 10am CST. There was an interesting question that got my creative juices flowing and yes I rambled on. I thought I would share it with you, in hopes it will help you see why I’m writing, The Celestial One.

How did you become interested in writing about the paranormal?

I had an interest in this genre since I was a child due to loving vampires, werewolves, shape shifters, angels and many others within the genre. Overall, I didn’t plan to write a serial series in this genre till Kera’s story took over my mind one night.

Thought I would share an insight into this serial to spark your interest and perhaps give you an idea of why it changed things for myself.

The Celestial One is the first episode series that will make up the Demonic Embrace serial. The story tells the tale of Kera a child born of a lycion and a spell caster. In this world lycions are a version of Angel. Nëyvia the Creator created them to protect mankind from the Shadow. Among these protectors are the chosen guardians, the Celestial Seven.

Nëyvia falls in love with the leader of the Celestial Seven and sires a son named Vladkis. His son becomes corrupted by the Shadow and leads to an unforgiveable betrayal. Vladkis is cursed and cast into the pit by his Father.

The only way to break the curse and get vengeance will be for Vladkis to find the woman that will love a creature of darkness and sire the child that holds the power to destroy all. The Shadow guides Vladkis to this chosen woman, and that is where the story begins.

I can go into more detail however I won’t because that would reveal spoilers. The plan is to release this serial starting January 2019. When you think about it, sometimes the genre picks you as the characters take over.

If you have any questions related to writing, my published works, WIP or the craft of designing covers head over here to submit your questions. I will feature questions here or on my design blog, I believe will be appropriate for my audience.

#WIP Monday – The Fall

Last week I made several writing goals I now realize were probably beyond my abilities. I got no writing done, found myself drowning in notes, character and world building. Then the outline took a form of its own. Even to add to the big failure I had several design projects along with family obligations.

I am not making an excuse, however with twin boys that are only one-year-olds and school starting back up our house has had several family visitors. The ones whom were over pretty much all week were my three nieces: Hailey, Hannah and Hope. They are trying to get in as much time with the boys before school starts back up this Thursday.

The boys had a blast and with the count down coming I will make a change for this week for my goals. I will make them more manageable and realistic this time around, this way if the girls want to come over I don’t feel like I have to choose between spending time with them or my writing.

This Week’s Writing Goals:

#AuthorAMA: What was the inspiration for writing your recent short story, A Father’s Protection?

Many of you know I am taking part in a combo #AMA (Ask Me Anything) under the category #DesignAMA and #AuthorAMA. I am answering questions related to my cover design/graphic design and my journey as an indie author. Today I am sharing an awesome question about my recent publication, “A Father’s Protection”. Hope you will enjoy the response as I enjoyed writing it.

What was the inspiration for writing your recent short story, A Father’s Protection? How long did it take you to write it?

The inspiration for “A Father’s Protection” came from my WIP, Tarzinëa. Several kingdoms within this series have gone beyond expectation and the plan is to give them spin-offs tales of their own. The kingdoms whom make up Tarzinëa are: Tarza (the human realm), Vladïmir (the Elven Kingdom), Fôndura (the realm of magic users), Mountains of Tõrin (the Kingdom of Dwarves) and the Forest of Ferrês (the realm of beasts). Each kingdom has several stand out characters I will create stories around, novellas or their own book series.

DarkDeath the protagonist in this story is the king of beasts and he plays a key role in the war that will touch all kingdoms throughout the book series. As I was creating these characters, I would compile flash fiction stories for my blog to get in the heads of the important characters. This process allowed me to understand their motives, thinking process and what matters most to them. I plan to put these flash fiction tales back on my blog here in the next few weeks. I had my blog on Wix.com first and moved over to WordPress.

Throughout this writing process I stumbled across a story idea that brought a softer side to DarkDeath. It also allowed me to showcase two of my favorite pups of SnowFire and DarkDeath’s that one day I want to create children stories around. His pups are all different which several will appear throughout the book series or stories.

It has been 3,000 years since the fall of the Empire. In this time Vladïmir has closed its doors to the world. The creatures of Ferrês have disappeared from the world and became myths in story books. However, through the use of the Tales of Ferrês story series we will look within the forbidden forest and see times in both past, present and future. I plan to do stories featuring characters from other kingdoms within this world creation but for right now I plan to showcase the mysterious kyres and the power these creatures possess.

I plan to publish the second installment in the Tales of Ferrês series mid-September. In this story Blackmoon will appear with a dragon named Meisha and her elven ryder Blake in “An Elf, A Dragon and a God’s Intervention”.

How long did it take me to write this story? Hmmm… I believe once the story took root in my head I accomplished it in under two hours. I didn’t do an outline or planning for this story it created itself. You can say DarkDeath took over and had a story to tell, I was just along for the ride.

If you would like to receive notifications about the new release works, updates and special sneak peeks sign-up for my mailing list. You will get “A Father’s Protection” free for signing up.

If you have any questions related to writing, my published works, WIP or the craft of designing covers head over here to submit your questions. I will feature questions here or on my design blog, I believe will be appropriate for my audience.

#Christian #Fantasy Author Spotlight: #Cover #Reveal

Today I have a special feature here for your enjoyment. This has been a long journey that took inside a year to accomplish. I have this showcased over on my design blog along with this one.

The purpose of this spotlight isn’t to ramble on forever like I do occasionally. My friend Alfredo Pachicano and I worked with Allison D. Reid on her cover series revamp of the Wind Rider Chronicles. It was a long process to create illustrated covers for not one but three covers. The other week I did a cover reveal for the third book in the series, Visions of Light and Shadow. Now I will do a series cover reveal showcasing not one but all three covers.

The covers below will release to retailers after Allison sends the print editions through the proof process. This means poor Allison has to wait on the wonderful snail mail service to get everything completed. Wish her luck with patience and hope createspace stops being a pain with the cover requirements.

#WIP Monday – The Beginning

Heya,

Today is my first post for my blog  feature, #WIP Mondays. These posts will consist of content around #WIP. I am working on two big ones right now. The first is “Tarzinëa: Rise of the Vardin”, this is just the working title. My second work is “The Celestial One” (TCO), this is planned to be a serial series.

The plan is to write Tarzinëa as I work on the outline for TCO. I had this one outlined in a book format but now I plan to change things over to a serial outline. TCO, I plan to start writing at the beginning of the year as I finish up book one of Tarzinëa.

Writing Goals for this week:

  • Write 10k in “Tarzinëa, Rise of the Vardin” – this will be a big goal for myself since I struggle with keeping on track. The big issue is going from not writing to writing, however this is going to be interesting.
  • Work out TCO’s serial outline – I am hoping to have at least the first two episodes outlined by this time next week.
  • World/Character Development – I need to get my notes and world/characters over into scrivener this week for the Legendary Heroes Saga. This way I can have everything in one location.

***Big Design Goal: I plan to begin working on my next ebook cover. The short story is “An Elf, A Dragon and a God’s Intervention” it will be a part of the Tales of Ferrês short story collection.

What’s New

This weekend I created a patreon page to offer special perks to patrons that subscribe to help with my journey into print. I have three tiers: Heroes ($2 or more a month), Vardin Knights ($5 or more a month) and Dragon Ryders ($25 or more a month). The tier you join will depend on the special perks and rewards you receive.

The reason I chose to create a patreon page is to help with the offset cost of publication and promotion. I plan to share special content only to those that participate as a patron to help earn their support. If you are interested in becoming a patron and want to help support me as an author you can join for as little as $2 a month by clicking here.

If you do wish to help with my journey into print but financially can’t afford the patron option, I have two other ways you can assist. I plan on putting together a list of beta readers for both, TCO and the Legendary Heroes Saga WIPs. If you would be interested in becoming a beta reader please contact me.

The other option would be to join my street team. Just drop me a message through email at authorkmjenkins@gmail.com or my contact page. This way when I have the group set up I can send you an invite. I plan to have this group created later this week. I will make an announcement on my blog once it goes live.

Things have Changed! Come and See!

cropped-author-logo
Things have changed here at my author website. Several of you have probably noticed that I changed my pen name. I use to go by KJ Hawkins, but I’ve changed it to K.M. Jenkins. I just decided that I would go with a name that is closer to my original. My full name is Kathryn Mae Jenkins, so I just made it into an acronym.

This change led to a website over-haul along with social media accounts. I provided author branding for myself and re-published my short story, “A Father’s Protection” under my new name. I even created a fancy new cover, designed by me 🙂 (check it out below).

You’re probably wondering, why the change? The honest truth is that I just felt like I needed a change. I have been a-wall for close to year on my blog. I guess becoming a mother of twin boys does that to a person. This last year was all diapers, bottles and spit up for this girl.

Now the boys are one and they have a new sense of independence. That means mom can go back to having a life, somewhat like before. This time I plan to do things different, I plan to keep things under control and stay focused. I have several WIP on my to-do list, however I narrowed it down to two.

The two I plan on working on are “Tarzinëa: Rise of the Vardin” and  “The Celestial One”. These projects are different in one big way. Tarzinëa is planned to be a full length novel. The Celestial One, is being changed from novella format into a serial. I am hoping to start publishing the first episode by the beginning of 2019.

I am hoping to get back into the full swing of writing by September. Right now, I am in the process of transferring all my files, notes, research and accomplished written chapters over into Scrivener. This will leave my August just about ate up. I will be blogging more and keeping everyone more in the loop. I even created a newsletter for those that want to be notified about new releases, sales and just my progress. Right now I plan to send the newsletter out once a month, on the 15th of each month.

Have I rambled enough? I think not, I think with my post I will give you more information on what is to come.

Post Schedule: (What to expect)

  • WIP Mondays – I will give you updates on my works in progress. There will be times I will show samples of work written (these are unedited sections of my books, expect errors). 🙂
  • Writing Tips Wednesday – I will come up with some writing tips that I have found helpful or believe will be a benefit to my fellow authors.
    • Paranormal Author Spotlights – Paranormal Authors will be featured in Author Spotlights/Guest Posts. This will be more frequent as authors sign-up. If interested reserved your spot by filling out this form.
  • Fantasy Fridays – This day will dedicated to fantasy, meaning sky is the limit. I might even decide to let one of my characters take my blog hostage for the day.
    • Fantasy Author Spotlights – Fantasy Authors will be featured in Author Spotlights/Guest Posts. Reserve your spot by filling out this form.

This is my schedule I hope to keep, unless life throws a wrench in the system. I will post outside the schedule for special events, announcements and new releases.
