#IWSG Writing with Life Interruptions!

Today is the first Wednesday of the month and that means I will be featuring my Insecure Writers Support Group blog post. If you haven’t heard of this group before, it is a support group for authors. It is a special place where writers can share their fears, doubts, and concerns, along with triumphs, as they journey down the path to publication. Check out the links at the bottom of this post if you have something to share, or need companionship from fellow authors to keep you writing.

The month of October was a wild ride. I had several exciting and scary things happen throughout the month. The first big change for the month was taking part in a handful of Facebook Takeover events. Did none of these events before. The first was the hardest, and the rest were easy.
Since doing my first online event I have had a spike in newsletter subscribers, increased my sales for permafree and paid ebooks. My street team has grown since the last post along with several things.
My goal for the month was to get at least 300 to 400 subs signed up. I crushed it and now pushing 650 total. I had over 400 downloads of my free and paid ebooks. In September I made over $1.50 in royalties. This month it was $3.41. The increase isn’t much money but for me seeing a tiny increase means everything. It means that people are enjoying my books and wanting more.
Besides my goals for the month and events something else happened. I wasn’t looking to get published through a publisher, it kind of happened. I was trying to find anthologies to take part in over the next few years to broaden my range when I stumbled into a chat with Vanessa Ross and several other publishers. Several individuals were asking them questions when I jumped in. Vanessa and I talked and after sending samples I am now a signed author.
I am now being published through Vanessa Ross’ publishing company, Triple Goddess Publishing. The wonderful thing is I still get creative rights and full control over everything. Bonds of Friendship is being published indie right now and everything else is through Triple Goddess. Overall, the month was wonderful, frightful and spectacular on so many levels. Now NaNo has started and I have five projects to get written.

THIS MONTH’S QUESTION

How has your creativity in life evolved since you began writing?

The question is optional, so I think with my long post already I will leave it to you. Tell me your response to this question. If you don’t write then tell me how books have sparked your creativity throughout your life.

This is my second post for my #IWSG monthly feature and a lot has changed since my last post. If you haven’t been following my weekly updates on my #WIP Monday posts, I’ll give a small update.

Last months post I was just getting my feet wet with writing again. Since then I have published two short stories and working on my third in my Tales of Ferrês series. I worked on Demonic Embrace my PNR serial series. And, I have been writing posts right and left for my blog.

I got more involved in the author community and joined several Facebook takeover events. I found several resources that built my newsletter from 1 follower to close to 200 in under half a month. The goal is to aim for 300 followers this month and once I hit 500, then I will look into weeding out those that aren’t active. The only reason I am doing this is because once I hit 1k subscribers I have to pay and if I will pay for my newsletter, then I would rather keep active followers on the mailing list.

My other big news is that with taking part and getting my name out there I had a few book sales. Not enough to do much with but each sale made me jump for joy. Then I receive my first review on Amazon and on a few other sites. Honestly, with reviews I don’t care if you hate my story or if you found issues, any feedback would be great and helps me learn.

THIS MONTH’S QUESTION

How do major life events affect your writing? Has writing ever helped you through something?

This question is optional and since I have already rambled on for a long period, I will keep my answer short and sweet. Major life events have been a big obstacle for me with having twins, having a design business, and writing. They have pulled me three ways and usually I have been getting things done.

However, I have a new addition to my plate of obstacles, I now am babysitting my youngest niece. She is a ball of energy and knows how to make a mess. She is a big help though with the boys and love having her around. So, even if babysitting means I have to stay up till two in the morning getting things done I will do it. Just means two hours of less sleep but who needs sleep, right? 🙂

#IWSG my Publishing Path

This is my first month being a part of the Insecure Writers Support Group. If you haven’t heard of this group before, it is a support group for authors. It is a special place where writers can share their fears, doubts, and concerns, along with triumphs, as they journey down the path to publication. My first time with IWSG.

I have been writing off and on for several years. This last year I went quiet with my writing, due to becoming a mom for the first time. I know this isn’t a real excuse for dropping off the face of the earth for over a year. However, I didn’t just face becoming a mom one but twice at the same time. Yes, I am the mother of twin boys, and I like to say the first year was a real roller coaster ride.

I faced several difficulties during just the first six months. I had severe postpartum depression they hospitalized me twice for, and not only had one big move but two. When June rolled around, I couldn’t believe my boys were one year olds. The nice thing, though, is that they no longer rely on me for everything. This means I get freedom to get back to what I love, writing.

August began my journey back onto the road to writing. I had a system issue with my mac, so I had to do a factory reset. The software I was using for writing in was Storyist to help keep my notes and content organized, sadly I lost the software in the reset. I still have the files, I don’t want to repurchase a software I already bought once. After this I changed over to Scrivener, so August was my catch up month.

I’ve been slaving away trying to get my files switched over I had in word doc format. If that wasn’t enough work, I also did a complete overall on my website, newsletter, and social media platforms. I even re-designed my short story, “A Father’s Protection” cover, and re-published it. Now I completed those blood sucking tasks, I’m hoping now I can get to outlining and writing.

WRITING GOALS FOR SEPTEMBER:

  • Put the final touches on “Tarzinëa: Rise of the Vardin” book 1 in the Legacy of the Silver Ryder series outline.
  • Convert completed outline for “The Celestial One” book 1 in the Demonic Love series into a serial outline.
  • Start writing “The Celestial One” episode one.
  • Re-work, re-write and continue with “Tarzinëa: Rise of the Vardin”.

THIS MONTH’S QUESTION

What publishing path are you considering/did you take, and why?

At this time I have only a short story published and working on my next ones. I decided to self-publish a long time ago. I want to have a say in how my books end up and I would like to get to know my readers. It isn’t about getting rich off my books or becoming famous. I want to do this for the love of writing, reading books and just connecting with people who love books as much as I do.

When I was growing up, especially in high school, books were my escape. I wasn’t an outgoing person anymore. I was closed off, shy, depressed and just had issues being in big crowds of people. The way I experience life and enjoyed my days was reading. Till this day I still don’t live it down, about what my algebra teacher told my mom during a parent teacher conference. “She is a bright student and has great potential,” he began. “I wish I could get her to put those dang books down.”

That is why I want to be a writer/author. I want to have a teacher look at one of my readers’ parent and say those exact words, or something close to it. Creating a world where they feel safe and can escape is my goal. I hope as this journey continues I never forget this goal and if I do, please hit me over the head with one of my books. Trust me, I will appreciate it. 🙂

#AuthorAMA: What themes did you use for your story “A Father’s Protection” and how was your writing process?

I am working my way through questions over on my AMA (Ask Me Anything) platform before it goes live on Tuesday. Yes, I can’t believe it is already here and I still have a dozen questions to answer. I am hoping to get a dent in these tonight before I go to bed, so I don’t have to many when the platform goes live. This being said if you have a question on cover design, being an indie author or on my WIP submit them here. It seems with each passing day more questions appear, I will defiantly be happy to answer them all.

This post highlights a question that got my head turning and made me realize how I need to work on myself as an author. This would be an easy question hands down, however, I realized I needed to do more research into my direction for my world Tarzinëa, and my short story “A Father’s Protection”.

Here is the question:

What themes did you use for your story “A Father’s Protection” and how was your writing process?

This was my response over on the platform:

My writing process for this story differed from my usual. I started out just writing flash fiction tales featuring characters from my WIP series, Tarzinëa. This process was to help me find each character’s true voice and personality. I didn’t realize how this would turn out till DarkDeath took over and his story with Digger came to life.

When I was writing this, I wasn’t thinking about any specific theme; it took on a life of its own. However, your question led me to think about what themes this story falls into, so yes I researched.

A Father’s Protection falls into several common themes that many writers used to further their plot. The themes this story falls into are: love, power, survival, courage and heroism, and war.

I thought I would provide a breakdown for how “A Father’s Protection,” falls into each of the listed themes. These themes will surface regularly throughout the Legendary Heroes Saga, through the publication of short stories, novellas and full-length novels. However, below will comprise the breakdown for this story alone.

LOVE -This story depicts the love between Father and son. DarkDeath isn’t one for showing emotion due to it being weakness amongst the kyres. However, when the time comes to protect one he loves he will move heaven and earth to protect them.

POWER – There has been a longstanding civil war within the forest between the kyres and twin-tailed foxes. The kyres are a dominant creature and have overpowered the twin-tails throughout the history of their land. Due to his deeds on the battlefront DarkDeath became the King of Beasts and why the kyres now are the true leaders over the Forest of Ferrês.
This leads to a power struggle between the two creatures when Digger finds himself inside the twin-tails territory and DarkDeath has to get him out before SilverHide takes him down.

SURVIVAL – This story has a big survival theme, since it centers on Digger going into enemy territory and DarkDeath fighting for both their lives. It is a survival of the fittest for protecting those you love and proving you’re the dominant creature.

COURAGE AND HEROISM – DarkDeath is the hero is this tale and throwing your wellbeing out the window for your pup is my definition of heroism. He is a courageous creature on his own merit, however, DarkDeath doesn’t hesitate when it comes to protecting those he loves. It takes a lot of courage to blast into enemy territory and take a on twin-tail without a second thought, especially when he can get overrun my the deceitful beasts without notice.

WAR – This tale focuses on the bond of Father and son as stated above, however it is more a battle scene than anything.

#AuthorAMA: What was the inspiration for writing your recent short story, A Father’s Protection?

Many of you know I am taking part in a combo #AMA (Ask Me Anything) under the category #DesignAMA and #AuthorAMA. I am answering questions related to my cover design/graphic design and my journey as an indie author. Today I am sharing an awesome question about my recent publication, “A Father’s Protection”. Hope you will enjoy the response as I enjoyed writing it.

What was the inspiration for writing your recent short story, A Father’s Protection? How long did it take you to write it?

The inspiration for “A Father’s Protection” came from my WIP, Tarzinëa. Several kingdoms within this series have gone beyond expectation and the plan is to give them spin-offs tales of their own. The kingdoms whom make up Tarzinëa are: Tarza (the human realm), Vladïmir (the Elven Kingdom), Fôndura (the realm of magic users), Mountains of Tõrin (the Kingdom of Dwarves) and the Forest of Ferrês (the realm of beasts). Each kingdom has several stand out characters I will create stories around, novellas or their own book series.

DarkDeath the protagonist in this story is the king of beasts and he plays a key role in the war that will touch all kingdoms throughout the book series. As I was creating these characters, I would compile flash fiction stories for my blog to get in the heads of the important characters. This process allowed me to understand their motives, thinking process and what matters most to them. I plan to put these flash fiction tales back on my blog here in the next few weeks. I had my blog on Wix.com first and moved over to WordPress.

Throughout this writing process I stumbled across a story idea that brought a softer side to DarkDeath. It also allowed me to showcase two of my favorite pups of SnowFire and DarkDeath’s that one day I want to create children stories around. His pups are all different which several will appear throughout the book series or stories.

It has been 3,000 years since the fall of the Empire. In this time Vladïmir has closed its doors to the world. The creatures of Ferrês have disappeared from the world and became myths in story books. However, through the use of the Tales of Ferrês story series we will look within the forbidden forest and see times in both past, present and future. I plan to do stories featuring characters from other kingdoms within this world creation but for right now I plan to showcase the mysterious kyres and the power these creatures possess.

I plan to publish the second installment in the Tales of Ferrês series mid-September. In this story Blackmoon will appear with a dragon named Meisha and her elven ryder Blake in “An Elf, A Dragon and a God’s Intervention”.

How long did it take me to write this story? Hmmm… I believe once the story took root in my head I accomplished it in under two hours. I didn’t do an outline or planning for this story it created itself. You can say DarkDeath took over and had a story to tell, I was just along for the ride.

My Favorite Character Creation & Why…

You know the saying many kids hear growing up from their parents, “we love you both equal and don’t have favorites.” Do you honestly believe that when parents say that…well some do, or at least they hope they do.

However, could you say the same thing to a writer? Are we allowed to pick a favorite character that has lived in our minds for years without pissing the others off. Well, perhaps we can it depends on the writer. If I had to stand here today before everyone and choose my favorite character creation it would be hands-down Kerowyné Flares.

I have many reasons for this choice. The first reason is due to Kerowyné being the first character to take form in my mind. She demanded attention like a true queen and I have loved her everyday since. The second reason would have to be the awesome adventures we go on together. Her adventurous personality gives me strength and fulfillment in my life where many couldn’t claim the same. Now for the third final reason I would have to say that Kerowyné is the part of me I wish I could have been.

I mean have any of you ever wondered if you were born in the wrong time. I for one would have fit better in the time of horse-drawn carriages, kings, queens, knights, and so much more. The world she walks is the one I always wanted to stand within and thanks to her creation I get a piece of that world when I put the pen to paper.

There are several reasons that could be stated to why Kerowyné is a big pain in the ass to work with, however that would spoil many tales that her and I wish to share within the books of Tarzinëa. Till next time happy writing :).
