Sludge and the Rabbit Girl

“Damn it to hell!” He fumed storming into his office.

I can’t believe that little brat did this. Christophé was red with rage. The nerve of that brat! All he wanted to do was relax in his office and get silence for two seconds from all these screaming kids. Instead, when he opened his office door, he got a pile of sludge on his head.

“What’s wrong, my lord?” Kent said stifling a laugh. “Oh…”

Christophé turned around to look at the little weasel of a man. “Don’t you even think about laughing!” he snapped. He slammed his hands down with force on his desk glaring with a deep fiery hatred reflecting in his eyes.

“Umm…why would I do that?” Kent asked pressing the back of his hand to his mouth trying to stop the oncoming giggles. He failed miserably as the heated glare pierced him from across the room.

“Quit your snickering…get me a damn towel and some clean clothes” he snapped. Christophé threw himself into his chair with a thud. This crud better not ruin my chair or hell will be paid ten-fold.

“Yes, sir!” Kent squealed. The slim built man with his red mage robes dashed from the office as if on fire. I swear the man is like a cat running after a mouse he can never catch.

This is the last straw. If Kero thinks she is going to get away with this prank, she has another thing coming. He walked over to his stacks of books lining his walls of bookcases doing his best not to drip on the carpet. Christophé fingers twitched as he looked for the appropriate binding. Once his hand rested over his spell book with its gold binding, he took it out and flipped through the pages looking for a spell.

“Got it,” he said. “This will be perfect.” A deep chuckle sprung from his throat as he walked over to the balcony. His eyes danced across the land below his terrace, looking out over the horse stables, the small kitchen garden, till his eyes locked on the sparring fields.

He could make out two forms in the distance, bent over each other snickering. There you two are, you little menaces, he thought staring at his granddaughter and her friend Alex. This is the last straw Kero and this time you will get punished.

Christophé looked down at the beautiful handwritten words as he spoke the words of power. “Ana sele raviso elishe.” A loud crack filled the air followed by a clap as he shut the book. Silently he laughed to himself as smoke formed around the two mischievous girls.

A few seconds passed before yelling began and he knew his spell was successful. That will teach the little brat. He watched as the crowd formed around Alex as Kero’s form disappeared. Bending over, the now solo girl picked something up small and fuzzy.

“Oh, how sweet it is to be victorious,” he said turning back around to find Kent walking back into his office. Perfect timing.

“My lord, I got you a new change of clothing.” The younger mage said as he handed over the garments and the towel to clean himself off.

“Great, now one last thing” he began as Kent arched a blonde eyebrow. “Keep Roseanne in the dark about what just happened.”

“What did you do this time?” Eyes of shock stared back at him. He knows all too well what I will do when pissed off.

“If you’re talking about the rabbit girl,” Christophé sneered. “I had nothing to do with it…” or did I?

He couldn’t help but laugh and enjoy the screaming about Kero being a rabbit. The price some are willing to pay to teach a spoiled princess a lesson. Now just have to think of a suitable punishment for that friend of hers.

He contemplated what to do about Alex’s hand in the ordeal but the sound of screaming filled his ears. Ah…sweet music. Now if only Hailey was here to squeeze her head off. Hmm…guess there is a use for great-grandchildren.

#IWSG Writing with Life Interruptions!

Today is the first Wednesday of the month and that means I will be featuring my Insecure Writers Support Group blog post. If you haven’t heard of this group before, it is a support group for authors. It is a special place where writers can share their fears, doubts, and concerns, along with triumphs, as they journey down the path to publication. Check out the links at the bottom of this post if you have something to share, or need companionship from fellow authors to keep you writing.

The month of October was a wild ride. I had several exciting and scary things happen throughout the month. The first big change for the month was taking part in a handful of Facebook Takeover events. Did none of these events before. The first was the hardest, and the rest were easy.
Since doing my first online event I have had a spike in newsletter subscribers, increased my sales for permafree and paid ebooks. My street team has grown since the last post along with several things.
My goal for the month was to get at least 300 to 400 subs signed up. I crushed it and now pushing 650 total. I had over 400 downloads of my free and paid ebooks. In September I made over $1.50 in royalties. This month it was $3.41. The increase isn’t much money but for me seeing a tiny increase means everything. It means that people are enjoying my books and wanting more.
Besides my goals for the month and events something else happened. I wasn’t looking to get published through a publisher, it kind of happened. I was trying to find anthologies to take part in over the next few years to broaden my range when I stumbled into a chat with Vanessa Ross and several other publishers. Several individuals were asking them questions when I jumped in. Vanessa and I talked and after sending samples I am now a signed author.
I am now being published through Vanessa Ross’ publishing company, Triple Goddess Publishing. The wonderful thing is I still get creative rights and full control over everything. Bonds of Friendship is being published indie right now and everything else is through Triple Goddess. Overall, the month was wonderful, frightful and spectacular on so many levels. Now NaNo has started and I have five projects to get written.

THIS MONTH’S QUESTION

How has your creativity in life evolved since you began writing?

The question is optional, so I think with my long post already I will leave it to you. Tell me your response to this question. If you don’t write then tell me how books have sparked your creativity throughout your life.

Fiery Seductress

In this entire castle his sanctuary lived within the racks of books piled upon the hundreds of build it cases and shelving units creating a library masterpiece. It gave him peace and plenty of space to think; the silence was always a welcome companion. The smell of old parchment from thousand year old books filled his nostrils. Christophé smiled sipping at his tea allowing his mind to drift back to a time when life was simpler. The calming aura of peace would have continued if it wasn’t for his beloved wife, Roseanne walking through the door.

She was in a beautiful green dress that made her fiery red hair look vibrant and alive. It was almost like looking into a blazing fire as she walked closer. Her hair wasn’t the part that captured his attention; it was those mysterious green eyes that enslaved him to her every desire. God, every time I see her it’s like the first time all over again.

“Sitting next to the fire like always I see,” she said tenderly.

“Enjoying the quiet.” He watched Rose out of the corner of his eye as the tea warmed his mouth. What is she up to?

She sat next to him entwining her fingers with his as her legs stretched out across his lap. Christophé could smell roses, hmmm… she had been working in her garden. The smell was intoxicating as it awakened parts of his once relaxed body.

“You need to stop worrying about her,” Rose said.

“Worrying about who?” he said trying to be nonchalant. Rose looked at him arching an eyebrow. He leaned closer exalting in her scent. Moments like this he wished she would just stop talking and enjoy his company. She always has to worry about something.

“Kerowyné is a strong girl,” she began. “She comes from a strong and powerful bloodline. There is nothing she can’t do.”

Christophé didn’t respond he stared at her watching the firelight dance among her red curls. If only you knew what was to come, my dear. Then you would understand why moments like these are best enjoyed.

“I do know one thing, love.”

“Oh, what’s that?” Their eyes met as his hand caressed her tender cheek. His lips brushed her earlobe as he said, “We best make every moment count.”

She turned her face towards him; they embraced one another as his hands wandered along her magnificent frame. They shared one kiss after another as he brought her to the floor and looked into those verdant green eyes. Her smile reflected at him. “Why are you being so friendly, dearest?”

He looked at her contemplating his response, “I suppose it’s those damn roses, my love.” Rose laughed in response and pulled him down on her. He didn’t resist, best to leave the worrying to another day. Passion consumed them as the night wagered on.

Morning came too soon, he woke to find himself on the library floor wrapped in Rose’s arms. I will hate leaving you, love. But, with a war coming Kerowyné is going to need all the help she can get with her training. Christophé snickered to himself. Poor Rikkin he doesn’t realize the handful he has on his hands.

This is my second post for my #IWSG monthly feature and a lot has changed since my last post. If you haven’t been following my weekly updates on my #WIP Monday posts, I’ll give a small update.

Last months post I was just getting my feet wet with writing again. Since then I have published two short stories and working on my third in my Tales of Ferrês series. I worked on Demonic Embrace my PNR serial series. And, I have been writing posts right and left for my blog.

I got more involved in the author community and joined several Facebook takeover events. I found several resources that built my newsletter from 1 follower to close to 200 in under half a month. The goal is to aim for 300 followers this month and once I hit 500, then I will look into weeding out those that aren’t active. The only reason I am doing this is because once I hit 1k subscribers I have to pay and if I will pay for my newsletter, then I would rather keep active followers on the mailing list.

My other big news is that with taking part and getting my name out there I had a few book sales. Not enough to do much with but each sale made me jump for joy. Then I receive my first review on Amazon and on a few other sites. Honestly, with reviews I don’t care if you hate my story or if you found issues, any feedback would be great and helps me learn.

THIS MONTH’S QUESTION

How do major life events affect your writing? Has writing ever helped you through something?

This question is optional and since I have already rambled on for a long period, I will keep my answer short and sweet. Major life events have been a big obstacle for me with having twins, having a design business, and writing. They have pulled me three ways and usually I have been getting things done.

However, I have a new addition to my plate of obstacles, I now am babysitting my youngest niece. She is a ball of energy and knows how to make a mess. She is a big help though with the boys and love having her around. So, even if babysitting means I have to stay up till two in the morning getting things done I will do it. Just means two hours of less sleep but who needs sleep, right? 🙂

NIGHTMARE OF FILTHAS DENGOTTA

It’s October and I thought I would start the month off with a bang. This flash fiction tale will be featuring the evil cursed villain, Filthas Dengotta. In this tale I will share a bit about his power and the blackness he spreads just by a single touch. Hope you enjoy this tale and helps get you into the Halloween spirit. 🙂

He looked out over the hall. It was centuries since he last seen the sunshine through stainless glass windows. Sometimes I wonder if those times ever existed beyond this hell that Bitch cursed me too! Filthas glared at the images dancing across the floor, bright with their beauty. Wolves, rabbits, horses, soldiers, and beautiful flowers pranced around the room bringing delight and merriment to all that viewed its wonder, except him.

“Ye enjjjoying the sccccenery, me Llllord?” asked a weak voice. Filthas turned to the scrawny boy hovering in the doorway. The lad looked sickly and worn to the bone. Doesn’t sound too bright neither. The lad hesitated then crept his way into the room. He sneered at the lad making him shake in fear.

“The happy animals, they disgust me! What do they have to be happy about? They are just food for my belly.” Filthas crossed his arms contemplating the best way to deal with this unrest. This place is too damn cheary for my taste where is the death and decay? You think the fool Marthred would know this place would infuriate me. Apparently, the imbecile doesn’t know my background too well. I will have to remedy that next time I see him. The sound of the lad’s whimpered response drew him back to the moment at hand “oh…”

“What’s the matter, boy! You like the little animals?” The disgust rang true through his words as he turned his red eyes on the lad. His fiery eyes full of hate watched the lad look longingly at the pictures emulating off the floor, “Yessss.”

A few moments passed in silence as emotions fought for control of his mind. He couldn’t decide if he wanted to destroy the beautiful dwarven glass windows or paint the floor with the lad’s blood. “What’s your name, boy?”

The lad looked up. Filthas watched the color fade from the boys face as he locked eyes with the fires of hell that were his eyes. “Well, you deaf or just plain stupid!” Fear prompted the lad to speak, “Scccottttieee.”

Chuckling Filthas let his skeletal smile scrape across his face. “Well, Scottie how about we have a game of sport? Go catch me a rabbit and I’ll show you a trick of mine.”

Scottie hesitated looking at him with questions written across his face. Filthas found himself intrigued by the young lad. Scottie must have known he couldn’t get out of doing what Filthas asked. “Umm yessss, me Llllord I’ll go fetccch ye a rabbittt.”

Filthas watched in amusement as the fifteen-year-old lad ran out of the room. If only he knew what he was getting himself into. Filthas continued to look around the room. This place needs darkness and blood I believe. He was musing about how he could make this lovely environment more dark and home feeling. The clatter of feet on the floor drew his attention to the door as Scottie came running through.

“I gotttt ye tttthe ra ra rabitttt like ye assssk me Llllord” Between the stammer and the heavy breathing Filthas scolded from the headache the idiot caused. The lad would be better without his tongue wouldn’t cause so much strife with that idiot speech. He pushed past the discomfort the boy’s words caused. “Good. I was wondering if you had the brains enough to catch one.”

Scottie cringed at the insult. Apparently, the little town idiot has a brain to register an insult at least. Filthas pulled off his glove and admired his hand. He always hated looking at himself in the daylight. When the sun hit him he showed his true form, the form of death. Filthas could see the chunks of skin falling off the bone leaving nothing but a bare skeleton behind. “Hand me the rabbit boy,” he ordered.

Scottie looked at his hand and gulped. “Masssster Martttthred sssssaid notttt tttto ttttoucccch ye hannnnd me Lllllord.”

“Oh, did he now,” Filthas growled. “Did the Lord of Idiots tell you not to hand me anything either!” His voice echoed off the stone walls and the innocent bunny thrashed in fear within the small bag Scottie was holding. Scottie shook his head. “Well boy, hand me the damn rabbit!”

Scottie whimpered as he handed Filthas the rabbit. It’s like he knows what will happen without ever witnessing it firsthand. “Tell me Scottie, did Marthred tell you why to fear my touch?” Filthas tilted his head holding the rabbit in his gloved hand watching the fear fill its eyes. These stupid animals know when death is upon them. He watched the boy squirm till his amusement shriveled up like a dead corpse. “Nooo…”

“Adorable little creatures rabbits are,” he mused. “So, sad that they are so fragile.” Filthas took his skeleton hand and gently poked the rabbit on the nose. Just a touch is all it takes for this curse to claim anything within my grasp. Moments passed within a small breath of time till the rabbit screamed a death scream, thrashing till blackness seeped into its veins. Once a beautiful brown fluff of fur now turned into a blackened corpse with the pain of fear and death etched into its face.

“Whatttt yeeee do me Llllord!” Scottie cried.

He laughed hysterically at the boy’s distress. “My touch is death!” Filthas pulled his dagger from its sheath gracing his hip and gutted the rabbit splattering black blood and guts across the floor. His laughter filled the halls as darkness took the light from the room. Even the stupid windows knew better than to challenge his blackened hands.

When the windows that once were bright and beautiful were tainted black by his magic he relaxed. The room became dark as night even though the sun shone bright outside the blacked now decayed windows. He tossed the lifeless rabbit at Scottie’s feet. He found himself extremely amused at the boys tear filled face. “Get out of my site you’re human emotions disgust me!”

“Yessss, me Llllord” Scottie whispered.

It didn’t take long for the boy to scurry out of the room. Awww, the pain and suffering of others is beautiful, it almost makes me want to cry. He yelled after the boy, “stammer in my presence again you imbecile you will face the rabbits fate, Scottieeeee!” The mockery in his voice range through the halls and he laughed with glee.

EBOOK: $0.99 | SMASHWORDS | BUY DIRECT

Sneak Peek

Meisha let loose a battle cry. The ground shook beneath Blake’s feet as he looked on in horror. A creature from Zorric dug itself out from under the obelisk, melting the soil into black goo as it fought for freedom. “Damn! It had to be a shadow wraith.”

Blake drew his sword preparing to charge. Meisha swooped down onto the ground, slamming her torso hard onto the surface. Her jaws flashed as the sun’s last rays gleamed off her white fangs. The wraith lunged, slashing at her underbelly. Fire filled the air as she released blasts upon the creature. Nothing Meisha did seemed to affect it. She lashed at it with her tail, clawed it with her talons, and bit deep into its hide with her teeth. The wraith just kept regenerating and cutting deeper and deeper into her hide.

Don’t Kill the Monk!!!

He sat there next to the lake looking out over the shimmering water. Rikkin found himself waiting longer than he liked. But, he didn’t have much choice in the matter. He had to wait for the appropriate time for his brother to contact him.

The sun rose over the lake marking mid-day. Rikkin stood up and paced to get feeling back into his stiff limbs. “Damn I’m getting too old for this.”

“That’s what being stuck in a rock for 3,000 years does to you!”

Rikkin grunted turning around seeing the reflection of his younger brother looking back at him. He knelt down to get a stronger read on his brother’s location. Roülle looked worse than he did. The poor fool looks dead on his fit. There were shadows under his eyes and dirt smeared a crossed his face. If he looks this bad, I wonder how the monk is faring. “How are the roads treating you little brother?”

“This world sucks! I swear every time I turn around there are bandits or people ruder than hell expecting me to get out of their way. In our time this crap wouldn’t happen…”

Rikkin watched the wild fire blaze to life in his brother’s eyes. He always gets so emotional. “This world has changed since our time amongst it. People have forgotten our kind and don’t show respect to anyone unless they wear the marks of nobility or have wealth.”

“Just be patient and try not to go nuts on anyone,” Rikkin said.

Roülle glared back at him and snapped, “I wouldn’t have to deal with this if I could just shift to the King’s side. But, no… I have to travel with this damn Monk!” The hostility radiating off Roülle created a red glow around his watery reflection.

“Calm yourself you are acting a damn fool.” Roülle snorted in response. If I was there, I would punch him into the abyss and back. He wouldn’t be acting so damn stupid. What do I have to do hold his damn hand because he wants to do everything the easy way?

“I’ll make no promises.” Roülle turned away, the sound of cracking twigs and rustling in the brush filled the air. The reflection faded for a second as silence took hold. Rikkin gripped his knee waiting to see if his brother would return. Every moment is precious and every second they waste using their magic draws more attention to them. “It’s just the damn Monk, apparently we need to get back on the road.”

He sighed in relief letting the tension fade away. “Be careful and do your best not to do something stupid that gets you killed. Okay?”

A smirk inched its way across his brother’s face. “Like I said Brother, I’ll make no promises. But, if the Monk keeps stopping to help every dang person in need, there will be hell to pay.”

“Remember… “

“Yeah! I no! Don’t kill the Monk,” Roülle snapped.

“You need to keep him alive! He has a purpose in the war to come…”

“I’ll keep him alive! Don’t worry…” Roülle smiled back at him. “Worry about your own mission Rikkin. Last time I checked I didn’t have a headstrong woman to deal with.”

He wasn’t wrong about that Kero was turning out to be a difficult student to train. I don’t know if she is ready for this responsibility, but hopefully with time she will change. Breaking the connection Rikkin left behind his brother and returned to his own task. It was up to him to get Kero ready for the hell this war was bringing and it looked like it was coming faster than expected. “Karigan I pray you picked the right person that is strong enough to carry this giant burden.”

#IWSG my Publishing Path

This is my first month being a part of the Insecure Writers Support Group.

My first time with IWSG.

I have been writing off and on for several years. This last year I went quiet with my writing, due to becoming a mom for the first time. I know this isn’t a real excuse for dropping off the face of the earth for over a year. However, I didn’t just face becoming a mom one but twice at the same time. Yes, I am the mother of twin boys, and I like to say the first year was a real roller coaster ride.

I faced several difficulties during just the first six months. I had severe postpartum depression they hospitalized me twice for, and not only had one big move but two. When June rolled around, I couldn’t believe my boys were one year olds. The nice thing, though, is that they no longer rely on me for everything. This means I get freedom to get back to what I love, writing.

August began my journey back onto the road to writing. I had a system issue with my mac, so I had to do a factory reset. The software I was using for writing in was Storyist to help keep my notes and content organized, sadly I lost the software in the reset. I still have the files, I don’t want to repurchase a software I already bought once. After this I changed over to Scrivener, so August was my catch up month.

I’ve been slaving away trying to get my files switched over I had in word doc format. If that wasn’t enough work, I also did a complete overall on my website, newsletter, and social media platforms. I even re-designed my short story, “A Father’s Protection” cover, and re-published it. Now I completed those blood sucking tasks, I’m hoping now I can get to outlining and writing.

WRITING GOALS FOR SEPTEMBER:

  • Put the final touches on “Tarzinëa: Rise of the Vardin” book 1 in the Legacy of the Silver Ryder series outline.
  • Convert completed outline for “The Celestial One” book 1 in the Demonic Love series into a serial outline.
  • Start writing “The Celestial One” episode one.
  • Re-work, re-write and continue with “Tarzinëa: Rise of the Vardin”.

THIS MONTH’S QUESTION

What publishing path are you considering/did you take, and why?

At this time I have only a short story published and working on my next ones. I decided to self-publish a long time ago. I want to have a say in how my books end up and I would like to get to know my readers. It isn’t about getting rich off my books or becoming famous. I want to do this for the love of writing, reading books and just connecting with people who love books as much as I do.

When I was growing up, especially in high school, books were my escape. I wasn’t an outgoing person anymore. I was closed off, shy, depressed and just had issues being in big crowds of people. The way I experience life and enjoyed my days was reading. Till this day I still don’t live it down, about what my algebra teacher told my mom during a parent teacher conference. “She is a bright student and has great potential,” he began. “I wish I could get her to put those dang books down.”

That is why I want to be a writer/author. I want to have a teacher look at one of my readers’ parent and say those exact words, or something close to it. Creating a world where they feel safe and can escape is my goal. I hope as this journey continues I never forget this goal and if I do, please hit me over the head with one of my books. Trust me, I will appreciate it. 🙂

King’s Understanding

“Damn that woman!”

“What has Princess Kerowyné done this time?” Dimitri groaned turning pages as he looked over the King’s daily schedule.

King Tyler stomped through the throne room with fury stretched across his face. Dimitri was watching him over his clipboard like a cat sizing up its dinner. Tyler had a strong urge to choke him out with that stupid look on his face but instead fell into his throne with a disgusted grunt. One day my time as king will end and I can be free of this place.

“Well, Sire you going to answer or just stare off into space?” He grunted in response to Dimitri’s voice. Glaring at that sly fox that was his most trusted councilor, Tyler contemplated how best to go about wording his thoughts. Dimitri always took the Queen’s side in every spat they had. One word escaped his mouth, “Sarah.”

The clipboard hit the table as Dimitri turned giving the King his full attention. “What are you and the Queen fighting about this time?”

I swear he makes it sound like all we do is fight. He tapped his forefinger in irritation raising an eyebrow contemplating where his trusted councilor’s loyalty laid. “Word got back to her about my father training Kerowyné in swordsmanship.”

“It seems lately all your fights have revolved around the Princess,” Dimitri said. Tyler watched as he crossed his arms standing with a look of complete annoyance dancing across his features. “Perhaps sending her to Fôndura to get away from the politics of the courts was a mistake.”

He sat back in his throne relaxing for a second allowing his fingers to message his right temple. “The best option at the time was to get her away from here for a while. The Lords were in an uproar after her last stunt she pulled, remember.”

All he got in response was a nod of the head. Till this day he didn’t understand why Kerowyné let Lord Marcus’ daughter get to her like that, but knowing who the girl’s father is he didn’t blame her. There were hundreds of times he wanted to punch out Lord Marcus himself, but apparently his daughter was a doer not a dreamer. Perhaps Sarah is right, she might need more discipline.

“Perhaps learning swordmanship will give her some discipline?”

Tyler looked up in shock, he couldn’t believe his ears. “Dimitri, you aren’t siding with the Queen on this one!”

Dimitri smirked at him, “the Queen has a point about what the true duties are for a princess. However, it is obvious the Queen needs to consider that your daughter is far different from any princess this kingdom has had before.”

“What are you getting at Dimitri?”

He felt a smart remark coming on and Dimitri didn’t disappoint. “After all, you weren’t a prince that fit the typical molding and almost killed everyone in your wake. To this day many still talk about how your persona changed since becoming the King.”

Tyler snorted, that’s because I’m bound by these damn chains of responsibilities and have to deal with Lords nipping at my heals like hounds. If it wasn’t for Sarah, I would have gone mad by now.

Dimitri stared at him with this sincere gleam in his eyes. “You might hate to admit it Sire, but your daughter is by far the most like you out of all your children. This should be a blessing, however in your case I feel it is something we will all come to dread.”

He looked on as Dimitri turned back to his clipboard filled with papers. Tyler contemplated his words and realized the truth within them. Perhaps swordsmanship training will give her discipline and help her with whatever struggles she is having within. Deep down he knew something was a miss and wished he had a way to bridge the gap between them. Till then I guess I will stick with distracting her mother till she finds her way.
