Author Interview: Alexis Lantgen

It’s Sunday and the weekend is almost over. I thought I would help you deal with the idea of Monday being right around the corner with an author interview. Check out my fellow science fiction and fantasy author, Alexis Lantgen. Also, I got one of her collections of short stories featured below as well. Her book is on KU so if you have it go snatch it up for FREE. If you don’t have KU you can grab her collection of short stories for $2.99. Happy reading everyone :).

The Interview

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a writer, teacher, and classical musician. I love science, history, and just learning new things. I try to be creative everyday, and I try to be a good parent. I like cats, reading, taking long walks, and going to the park. I love camping and travel!

What genre do you write in? Why?

I write science fiction and fantasy because honestly, I like them more than other genres. I think they’re more fun and imaginative, and honestly just more enjoyable to read. I also love researching both science and history.

If you could change one thing about your life what would it be and why?

I think I’d choose a career that paid more, haha!

What is your writing process like?

Honestly? I write while my toddler’s napping. I also have weekly writing nights where I get together with other authors. Honestly, I just try to do the best I can with the time and energy I have in any given day.

Do you have any strange quirks you do while you write a book?

I don’t think so. I may be a little more absentminded, but I can be pretty absentminded anyway.

How did you come up with the story within your books? What inspired your creativity?

I think I’m inspired by science, history, nature, and just observing life. I love going for nice long walks in the evenings or taking the kids to a park in the afternoon. I get ideas from daydreaming, watching the world around me, or when I read a good book. When I’m writing scifi, I also look around for new discoveries.

Who inspires you to write in your normal day life?

I’ve had to be pretty self-motivated, but my friends Sarah Mensinga and Gerardo Delgadillo and the rest of my writing group have definitely helped a lot.

Who is your biggest support system in your life?

I think the love I get from my family–my husband, my children, my mother and sister, are the biggest support system I have. I have many great friends too.

What should we expect from you in the coming months?

I’m hopefully going to finish the first draft of a new book, though I have no idea when it will be ready to launch!

What is the one thing you want to say to your readers?

I hope they enjoy my books! I spent years writing the stories in both my books, and I really hope that they’re entertaining and engaging for readers.

Author Interview with Phillip Kessler

Wow its the weekend already? I can’t believe this week went so fast. To help you through the weekend I got multi-genre author Phillip Kessler to sit down with me for an interview. Hope you enjoy getting to know him. Happy reading :).

The Interview

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m originally from a rural community on the High Plains of Northeastern Colorado, but I spent much of my youth in small towns in Southeastern Nebraska. Not much of a difference, really. Growing up in the country and in small towns gave me plenty of time to read books of all sorts. I actually learned how to read and write through books that were published in the UK. Made things fun in school when I was told I was spelling colour wrong.
My young adult life took me to Iowa and Minnesota with side trips to Nevada, California, and Florida. I’m not well-traveled, but I have read books that have put me into different parts of the world, the universe, or somewhere outside the realm of reality.
I’m still in Southeast Nebraska, living a stone’s throw from the capitol building in Lincoln. An area filled with ghost stories and a unique history. Going under the streets of this part of the city (several small towns that were later incorporated, are deep tunnels that were built by the Masons that go from the capitol to the governor’s mansion to the various Masonic Lodges, and even to the Regional Center (a facility for the criminally insane) and the medium security prison on the edge of Lincoln.
All great fodder for my main series Dark of the Moon, New Beginnings.

What genre do you write in? Why?

I’m a multi-genre author. I spend most of my time in the broad genre of fantasy – urban fantasy, paranormal fantasy, sci-fi fantasy, and more. I have two fiction pen names that dabble in historical fiction, romance, mystery, and erotica, but I’ll leave those for another time.
I love the idea of being able to pick up a book (or an ereader) and escape into a world that isn’t like our own, or maybe just a little different from our own. Diving into the crystal caves of Mary Stewart’s interpretation of the Authurian legends or snuggling up with a smexy vampire from the Vampire Academy are great ways to put aside the duldrums and stresses of everyday life. If I can help another reader do the same, then I have reached that part of my writing goal.

What inspired you to become an author?

All these stories floating around in my head. That’s the simple answer. I have characters nagging me to tell their tales, to make them come to life. And, oh the stories they have to tell! Elaine and Sandra from DotMNB are constantly vying for my time and get unhappy when I spend time with the futuristic Romans and Greeks of Station Zeta or the multi-cultural crew of the R.S. Pinnacle. Then there are the demons and angels plotting to overthrow the status quo (first installment just released in Feathers & Fiends from Stained Glass Publishing, “Principia Bellum”).
Needless to say, the characters living inside my head provide plenty of inspiration. But they aren’t the only ones. My real life Muse throws plenty of fuel on the fire. Rare is the conversation we have that doesn’t spawn another story or article idea – I also write spiritual nonfiction under yet another pen name.
If I could just live with the characters and ideas in my head and be successful enough to not work for “the man,” I would be set.

B-W-L togetherWhat is your writing process like?

There’s a process? No, really?
In all seriousness,,, When the characters of a particular story battle their way through the morass of my cluttered mind and demand loudly that I write their stories, then I write. I clean the desk of whatever else I have been doing and set to it.
Strong coffee and ice cold water at hand, a source of nicotine (I’ve been vaping in an attempt to quit smoking – no lectures please), a good soundtrack, and my furbabies contentedly sleeping nearby. Then, I am ready to write. How often do all those things fall into the perfect place? Almost never.
So, then I will push things aside, guzzle a pot of coffee, and barrel through without sleep to bring the characters to life on the screen. The sacrifices that authors will make for their characters and their stories!

Do you have any strange quirks you do while you write a book?

Non-authors think most authors are strange and quirky. If I had to say something I do while writing is a quirk, strange or not, I would have to say that my ability to shut out almost everything around me – save for the cats – is one of them. I can ignore the phone, Facebook, even the herd of elephants (children) running around in the upstairs apartment.
Unlike many authors I know, I often write with a TV series or movie playing in the background. I can filter the “distraction” of the story on the TV into a compartment of my mind while the words flow out through my fingers to relate the story of the character(s) that are most vocal in the rest of my mind.
Oh, and speaking of the cats! The youngest, my mostly black tuxedo male named Jonathan Renfield Bedlam (gee, wonder where I came up with those names), demands attention when I am glued to the computer writing. He’ll drag his favorite toy up onto the desk and drop it on the keyboard or push the mouse from under my hand while I am editing. To entertain him, and give myself something to chuckle about, I will stick that favorite toy under me and let the streamers hang to the floor. He’s happy to play with the streamers and I am able to work. We’re both happy – for a time. And then he’ll be back up on the desk flopping onto the keyboard. “Pay attention to me!”

How did you come up with the story within your books? What inspired your creativity?

Backfire, the first book in the Dark of the Moon, New Beginnings series started out as a short story for a Pagan fiction collection. I admittedly missed my deadline (I’d write a book on procrastination, but I’d never get around to finishing it) and shelved it for almost entire year. I found myself suddenly and unexpectedly unemployed. A friend suggested that I finish the story – an allegorical tale of what can happen when someone does magick for another without their permission. The two page sketch of a story quickly turned into a short novel – in three weeks!
Sandra and Elaine came to life for me. On the screen and in my head. They became nearly as real to me as the people around me (wait, I was hermitting in my apartment and not being around real people). That short novel went live on Amazon on April 1, 2017. One month later, the second book was published.
Yes, that’s right. Only a month later. It took a few months to write the third book, but I was feeling really good about my creativity and ability to tell a story by the end of August 2017. Three novels in six months! Wow!
Book four is still in process, two years after the third one went live. Why? So many other ideas! But Sandra and Elaine’s story will continue! There is so much still in store for them and their motley crew of friends and allies.

What authors inspired you to write your own book?

My friend who encouraged me to finish Backfire. She’s a published author as well. We may no longer be in contact (long story that doesn’t deserve being told here), but if it weren’t for her push, I doubt I would have ever finished that first story in Dark of the Moon, New Beginnings.
Fellow small-trad and indie authors like Asaph Mehr, Diane Morrison, Andy Peloquin, and so many more. All of those who I met prior to publishing Backfire and all those I have met since. They are all inspirations in their own way. Some of them, not just those named, have become good friends.
And my Muse. Without her, I would have become discouraged in the process. She reminds me that writing is more than a job, it is a calling for some. And for me, that is what it is. A calling.

Are you Indie Published or Traditional? Why did you choose this route?

My Dark of the Moon, New Beginnings series is technically indie published – originally. I moved into the publishing world myself shortly after the third book was launched. I have published short stories for others and am in negotiations with other authors to publish their books under my publishing house of Saturn Returns Publishing. I’ve also had more traditional publishing experience with my spiritual nonfiction projects. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Moon Books, an imprint of John Hunt Publishing in the UK (full circle, eh?).
I chose to self publish because I didn’t feel that a mainstream publisher would be interested in my stuff. But I knew there was a market for it. That, and I don’t have the patience to work with big named publishers who drag the process out much longer than I feel it needs to be. I guess I made a good choice. Though the advertising budget is almost nothing, I enjoy doing the legwork to get my works out there and in front of the readers. I enjoy the one on one with fellow small and indie authors. There may be drama from time to time, but I have built some strong relationships with my fellow authors and even other small publishers.

Backfire teaser graphic - Teresa HurstWhat should we expect from you in the coming months?

As an author, I have several short stories due out by the end of this year. Including some horror and paranormal romance. I hope to complete book four in DotMNB in time for the holidays and finish that part of the story before diving into more new adventures for the ladies and their cohort.
The collaborative RP novel “Legacy of a Corrupted Mind” is due out October 7th. Legacy is a role-play novel collaboration between myself and nine other authors, including the mastermind behind the project Lianne Willowmoon. We’re gearing up for a big release celebration in Baltimore, MD at the gravesite of Edgar Allan Poe, who inspired all the characters in the two volume novel. Legacy is on pre-order through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and your favorite online ebook retailers and will be available in paperback in early October with a special limited edition hardcover edition.
As a publisher, a number of anthologies are scheduled to come out by the end of the year. A merfolk collection, queer horror stories, and more.

What is the one thing you want to say to your readers?

I want to say “buy my books!” Every author wants to say that. But in all seriousness, after you buy AND read my book, leave a review, share your thoughts with your friends, tell me what you liked or didn’t like. And keep coming back for more! I write as a calling, but part of that calling is sharing my thoughts, my stories, my ideas, with those who want to read them.

Author Interview: Debbie Manber Kupfer

It’s another hump day treat here on my blog. Today I am featuring Debbie Manber Kupfer in her own author interview. Stop by and check it out to get to know this amazing fantasy author.

The Interview

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a writer, puzzle maker, editor, tea drinker and cat lover. I grew up in London and lived in Israel, North Carolina and New York before somehow ending up in St. Louis. I believe that with enough tea and dark chocolate you can do anything.

What genre do you write in? Why?

Fantasy that takes place (mostly) in our world. Because I love to dream of magic, but when I do I kind of want to believe that it’s out there somewhere hidden in our world if you know where to find it.

What does your daily life look like? What do you wish it was like?

I get up in the morning and make tea, then I open my WIP and either write or edit. I make myself do this each day before I go on the internet. The internet and in particular Facebook is my biggest timesuck and in order to get work done I have to turn it off.
After I’ve completed my requisite words for the day I go on to editing for clients and writing my puzzles for Penny Press. Sometimes I take the puzzle work out to a local cafe or fast food place for the same reason as I write without the internet in the mornings. Out of the house I’m away from distractions and puzzles work better on paper than at my computer.

Tell us about your latest release?

COTULA is book 5 of my P.A.W.S. Saga. It continues the story arc that started in the previous book, LONDINIUM. A young girl, Rifka has been kidnapped and held by magic by an insidious werewolf. In the last book she received a magical stone from an old animagus camel, Shirley, in London Zoo.
This special stone is called a cotula and comes from an old witch in a faraway village. The witch Grisela is the keeper of the stones and she sends a number out into the world. When all the stones come together only then will Rifka be released.

How did you come up with the story within your book? What inspired your creativity?

The story kind of evolved as I was writing it as truly this whole series has. When I’m not writing fiction I write puzzles for magazines and this particular book is the most like a big puzzle of any of my books. All of the pieces have to come together for the story to be told.

Tell us about your main character in your book. What makes them unique?

I would guess that Rifka is the main character of this particular episode of the P.A.W.S. Saga, though all the books are pulled together by the cat shifter, Miri Katz.
Rifka comes from a sheltered background as she grew up in her family’s compound in Safed and never ventured much out of it until the day she was kidnapped. Though her family has magic, Rifka has yet to find hers. Yet she is filled with compassion for others and finds it hard to hate anyone even her captor. Many have hinted that Rifka would make an excellent healer and maybe this is her destiny.

What is your writing process like?

I’ve written most of my first drafts during NaNoWriMo or Camp NaNo months. I spew out the words over the course of weeks and generally believe that everything I write is crap. But I keep going until I reach the end of my story and resist the urge to edit as I go along. Then I put my manuscript down for a few weeks and work on something else (editing for my clients and puzzles usually). Then when I come back to my manuscript to edit I do so with fresh eyes and usually I discover that it’s not half as bad as I thought it was. I self-edit a few times until I’m satisfied and then send it off to my beta readers. I currently have four betas who are awesome and are not scared to tell me when stuff doesn’t work. After I get back my story from my betas I edit again responding to their suggestions. Then my book goes to my editor, Rebecca Jaycox. After her edits I edit again and then format the book and send up for a proof copy. I proofread on paper (I catch more that way) and then finally after all that I publish and then start all over again.

Who is your biggest support system in your life?

Not one, but a bunch of people, my beta readers, my editor, my family (including my kitties) and some wonderful FB groups, Dragon’s Rocketship, YA Author Rendezvous and AAYAA. It truly takes a village to write a book.

Are you Indie Published or Traditional? Why did you choose this route?

I began my publishing journey with a small traditional publisher that has since gone out of business. Today I self-publish with Amazon’s KDP and I love the control it gives me and honestly would only go back to trad if it’s with the big boys.

What should we expect from you in the coming months?

Cotula comes out August 6th and I’m already writing book 6, Jhara which all being well will be out in 2020. In addition I’m attending two events as a signing author and panelist in the fall: Penned Con in St. Louis on Sept 13/14 and Archon in Collinsville on Oct 4-6. Sooo … if anyone is going to be at either of these events feel free to stop by and say hi.

Author Spotlight: Karen DuBose

It’s another Monday to start off another knew week. Last week I was on vacation. Went to Des Moines, IA for the Iowa State Fair and to see family and friends. It was a fun adventure with the kids, my fiancé and my mom. Now to get things back on track I am featuring Fantasy author Karen DuBose today in her very own Author Spotlight. Check it out below.

unnamed (1)What’s Crackin’? My name is Karen DuBose. I write fantasy and dark fantasy romance novels. I have 5 books out currently. Book 6 will be out in September and I’m working on edits for book 7. I have one complete series out. The Elder Series. It’s about shifter, witches, fae, elves, and seers. I have 2 stand alone for a series called the Shady Oaks. Wailing waters that is a dark twist on the little mermaid and World of Nightmares is my dark twist on The Nightmare Before Christmas. That one will be out in September. Tainted Magic is the one I’m doing edits for now. It’s the second book in The Light Realm Series. Untainted Magic is the first book.

When I’m not writing or editing. I work my 2 day jobs. One I’m a postal worker and the other I’m an inventory specialist. They take up a lot of my time, but that’s ok. It let’s me do a lot of book signings. I love meeting old and new fans. They are the reason I write. I take pride in my work. It warms my heart when they are waiting for the next book to come out. Interacting with fans is the highlight of my day.

A lot of people have asked me about my writing style. I really don’t have one. What comes to mind is what I write. I don’t plot or outline. The only thing I really do is make a spread sheet for my characters. I have way too many to remember them by heart. I write their descriptions down who know who and so on. I know what the ending of the book is or close to it. Getting there is the fun part. I let the characters do there thing.

My support group is amazing. My husband Steven, my mom Lois and her husband Charles, my sister Cindy, and of course my fans. They are behind me in my crazy world 100%. The first book I wrote. I was nervous about. What if people hate it, what if they make fun of me? Yes, all authors feel this way. Even with their 30th book published.  Every book I publish there is self-doubt. The what ifs. I push through them every time and I’m glad I do. I love to create worlds people can get lost in. Even if it’s only for a little while.

I’ve also been asked what my favorite snack and drink is while I’m writing. White Monsters (Energy Drink) and I don’t really snack. I forget most of the time to eat while I’m writing. The must things I have to have is my monster and music. I’m a happy go lucky woman.

Book Spotlight: Catching Dragons

It’s release day for Catching Dragons by speculative fiction author Stephanie Ayers. Check out this fun excerpt provided below. Hope you love it and purchase this book today. It is book two in the series so hurry and grab book 1 here for 99¢.

Excerpt

“You look hungry. Care for an apple?”
Wallas eyed the apple carefully as his stomach grumbled in complaint. Was this trickery or kindness? Forest dwellers were not known for their generosity. The woman still held the apple out, and he took it from her.
“I am not hungry now.” He turned the apple over and examined it. Its blood red skin teased of sweetness. “I daresay this will come in handy later in my return home.” He put the apple in his pocket and offered a small bow. “I am Wallas Eleasar, Counselor to King Teodric Wynne of Northend.”
The woman rose from the ground and offered a small curtsy back, spreading her patchwork skirt between her fingers. “I am Ulia MacDougal, daughter of Lord Alfrey.” She pointed to the trees on the east side of the city. “We live just beyond the treeline. My father is a farmer, we have many flowering and fruit-bearing trees under our care.” She sat back down and spread out a small blanket in front of her and pulled more fruit from the basket.
Wallas’ stomach gurgled in appreciation. He had not packed much food, nor expected to be refused entry into the Holy City. She had not invited him to join her, so he remained where he was. His instincts still screamed warnings, but he ignored them. It could be a product of his own fear that kept him from befriending someone who had been nothing but kind since they met.
She patted the center of the blanket in invitation. “Might as well eat while you’re waiting. Come on, I have plenty.” As if to prove her point, she held the basket up. Despite the array of fruit spread on the blanket—more apples, and oranges, pears, peaches—the basket overflowed.
Impossible, he thought, but his stomach interrupted. He cast his eyes to the trees on the east, hoping to catch sight of her father’s farm. Something, anything to assure him and put his sixth sense at ease, but he saw nothing. Don’t be impolite, his mind said. He sat on the ground across from Ulia but did not touch the fruit.
She shrugged her shoulders and picked up a peach. She bit into it and closed her eyes as juices ran from the corners of her mouth. “Mmm. I swear we grow the sweetest peaches on Savania!” He watched hungrily as she finished the meat and tucked the pit into her basket. She reached for another peach and held it out to him. “Peaches are my favorite. Are you sure you don’t want one?”
Wallas hesitantly accepted the peach. He looked it over carefully, not sure what he was looking for, but still suspicious. Ulia picked up an orange this time and began peeling it, observing him all the while. Laughter filled her eyes, and he relaxed a bit.
He took a bite from the peach, surprised to discover she was right. It was the sweetest peach he had ever tasted. “I’m sorry. Your hospitality is not unappreciated. It’s just hard to know who to trust these days. There are many in the forest who appear kind but would be just as quick to stab you in the back while you sleep.”
Ulia nodded. “Yes, and some might even poison the very same fruit they eat.”
Wallas’ face turned ashen. He looked at the peach again, almost completely gone, and set it down. His eyes rounded as his stomach complained again, this time not out of hunger. He retched once, twice, five times before his bowels quieted long enough for him to breathe. His face crinkled in distaste at the sickly sweetness that had filled his mouth. His stomach rumbled with the beginnings of another round.
Ulia wasted no time rushing to his side, a small knife drawn. As he fell backwards, she pulled her arm back, ready to strike.

Author Interview: C.J. Rose

Today I have a special treat. I am featuring fantasy/cookbook author C.J. Rose. Below you will find out some fun information about her and get to check out cook book. The awesome thing about this cook book is you can snatch it up for FREE on Kindle Unlimited. So, sit back and join the party. Lets get into this…

The Interview

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I like the smell of cigars. Lol Other than that I am pretty boring.

What genre do you write in? Why?

I write fantasy fiction because I feel that everyone who reads a genre like this has the ability to get lost in a world that one could only dream of.

If you could change one thing about your life what would it be and why?

Funny enough, I don’t think I could choose just one thing, but at this point I am grateful to be alive and that alone is worth waking up for.

What is your writing process like?

I am super sporadic when I write. I found that it is easier for me to write when I feel like it instead of forcing myself to do it at certain times for certain lengths.

How did you come up with the story within your book? What inspired your creativity?

I was never a lover of books growing up. It was not until I discovered Harry Potter in my later years that I realized why i didn’t. It was because I was reading the wrong things. One I started reading books similar to that, the ideas just started flowing. I used to write poetry and song lyrics in high school, but this was a new adventure for me.

Who inspires you to write in your normal day life?

My family and friends are my main motivation. They want to see me succeed and I do not want to disappoint them.

When you write your books do you go straight for pencil and paper or a computer? Why?

I do a little of both actually. If I am at a computer I will go there first, but if I am not, then I will pencil and paper it. I have even been known to use a napkin or two once in a while.

Who is your biggest support system in your life?

People of every outlet.

Who are your top three favorite authors?

Edgar Allen Poe, Jane Austen, William Shakespeare

What should we expect from you in the coming months?

I have a few things in the works actually. I will be releasing book 3 in the series in the next few months. I am revamping the companion cookbook, and working on a follow-up novella to the series.

The Author

I am RoseAnn Labriola, penning as C.J. Rose. C. J. Rose resides in Central Illinois; originally from just south of Chicago. The passion for writing took root in high school where she began writing song lyrics and poetry. C.J. found her inspiration from other fantasy and YA novels such as Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, and more. On top of literature, Rose has a keen love for all things nerdy and sci-fi. On a quiet night, you can find her curled up with an episode of Doctor Who, Arrow, Firefly, and more. C. J. also belongs to a theatre organization KVTA. The devotion to musicals and theatre has led her to be a part of over 10 shows as an actor, and over 20 as a staff person. I am a hairstylist, with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. I have always loved writing, whether it was poems, song lyrics or stories. I decided it was time to sit down and put my thoughts to paper of a story concept I have played with for long time. In the process, it developed into the full-length version that I am proud to call my first published book, Bridge of the Gods – A Generation Son Chronicle. Now I have 3 novels in the series as well as a companion cookbook.

Character Interview: Edgar Wynn

It’s hump day! The weekend is almost here and do I got a treat for you. This character interview with Edgar Wynn is special because his book comes out this Saturday, August 10th. So, to get you in the spirits to pre-order his awesome book check out his character interview below. Happy reading everyone :).

The Interview

Who are you and what makes you great?

My name is Edgar Wynn. I don’t consider myself great at anything. My four brothers are much better skilled at most things than I am.

What is your sole purpose in life?

My assigned role in life is as a mage, but I’ve even managed to bungle that up and lose my ability to do magick. If it weren’t for the fairy dust Tribba got me, I wouldn’t have conjured that dragon or managed anything magickal at all.

What kind of adventures have you had that stay with you till this day?

Up until I was forced to leave my kingdom, my adventures were limited to exploring the Wynnrar Woods surrounding Northend, my city. Since then, traveling through the desert and meeting Juba (and him not eating me!) and championing the Hegis in Willowglen have stayed with me. I conjured a dragon! I’m also madly in love with a dwarf and can’t wait to get back to Willowglen to see her.

Do you have a love interest? If you do please tell us about him/her or why you don’t.

Salisa is the love of my life. I met her in Willowglen when we would go to the arena. She tends a cart in the marketplace. Her family has lived in Willowglen for a long time, and while Tribba disapproves of our relationship, it’s mostly because of some dark history between Salisa’s father and Tribba herself. Salisa isn’t her father though, and Tribba will come around in the end. She’d already started to when Derik forced me to return home.

Tell us about your journey you are on and how it has helped you grow as a person.

I left Northend to relearn my magick, but I never made it to the Great Mage. I championed Tribba in Willowglen instead. She helped me gain some self-confidence, even if I didn’t regain any of my own magick. At least now I have some people on my side, even if they are dwarves. I don’t believe the same as my brother Derik does. I believe everyone is equal, all have something equally important to contribute to Savania’s society. I’m not sure I would say I’ve grown any. I’m still as small as I was when I left. Derik reminds me of this often enough.

What kind of creatures do you see on a daily basis?

Since Tribba gave me a pouch of fairy dust, I see them on a regular basis. Sergy has decided to help me and I’m very appreciative. Derik and I encountered a bargle on our way back to Northend. These are the tiger/bear like creatures that live in the Wynnrar Woods and protect it. Up until I left Northend, I had only seen forest creatures like rabbits, chipmunks, deer, and within the city walls I would find rats, mice, horses, and the occasional bat.

Who do you look up too? Why?

My older brother Fredryk. He’s tough but gentle and always manages to look out for the little guy. He is always helping others and giving up his own things to help someone else. He is also the captain of our army and can swing a sword better than anyone else.

If you had one thing about yourself that you would want to change what would it be?

I wish I had more guts to speak my mind.

Who is your ultimate enemy? Why?

I don’t have any enemies, not really. I want to find the persons responsible for putting the enchantment on my city, and make sure the dragon queen and her knights don’t take over, but “enemy” is a strong word. I’ve never really had any conflicts with anyone worth declaring them an enemy over.

What should we expect from you in your coming book?

Charades will complete my story. I leave Northend for Evenir, the Holy City and finally meet up with the Great Mage and Ravengale, his apprentice. I rejoin with Tribba and lead a small army against Soren in Northend.

Catching Dragons 3

Character Interview: Oswald the Ostentatious

It’s Sunday…which means tomorrow is Monday. Let me help you with your early Monday blues by showcasing this special character interview featuring Oswald from Catula by Debbie Manber Kupfer. Stop by and check it out. Who knows you might find an awesome book to purchase.

The Interview

Who are you and what makes you great?

My name is Oswald and I’m the Principle of the P.A.W.S. Institute of New York. I’m an animagus flamingo and am very fond of the color pink. I run the Institute with a firm but friendly hand. I also very much enjoy art and teach an art class at P.A.W.S. for those who are artistically inclined. I also enjoy interpretive dance and song in my flamingo form and have been told I have amazing range.

What is your sole purpose in life?

To act as shepherd and guide to the students and faculty of P.A.W.S.

What kind of adventures have you had that stay with you until this day?

It is a checkered past that led me to where I am today. Before settling at the New York Institute I traveled the globe visiting different international communities of shapeshifters. One of the most exciting was my time spent in the P.A.W.S. Institute of Kenya where I was honored to go on safari with the then head of the institute, Alhaadi. Alhaadi’s animagus is an elephant and I traveled on his back for part of the journey. I will never forget my time there and hope that someday I can visit again.

Do you have a love interest? If you do please tell us about him/her or why you don’t.

Yes, Geoffrey and I have been together for eight years. His raven form, so much more practical than my flamingo, helps keep me grounded. He is also an excellent listener. As the Principal at P.A.W.S. I spend much of my day listening to the problems of others. It is good to relax in the evening and share a bottle of fine wine with Geoffrey and unload the problems of the day.

Tell us about your journey you are on and how it has helped you grow as a person.

And as flamingo — don’t forget that! Seriously, even though I’m head of the institute I still learn something new every day. In particular during this last year we have taken in our first werewolf. Werewolves in New York have traditionally had a bad reputation as there is a well-known werewolf mafia that operates out of Brooklyn that have caused some terrible conflicts over the years. The werewolf at P.A.W.S. though, Jamie Barnes, appears to be an earnest young man who assures me that he only ever hunts vermin on the full moon. I believe therefore that Jamie is helping me overcome my previous prejudice against wolves.

What kind of creatures do you see on a daily basis?

Ah, well we have all sorts at P.A.W.S. Cats and birds aplenty along with a talented group of animagus foxes who have formed a rock band (Demonica and the Screaming Foxes). We also currently host a spider monkey who is fond of losing himself in the trees of Central Park and a magnificent peacock who is the most talented student in my art class.

Who do you look up too? Why?

I very much respect Jessamyn, my counterpart at the P.A.W.S. Institute of the Midwest. She is probably the most powerful magician of illusion in the world. She transforms her office daily into a different scene and I swear you can even smell the scent of the blossoms in her illusory meadows.

If you had one thing about yourself that you would want to change what would it be?

It is unwise mess with perfection, don’t you think?

Who is your ultimate enemy? Why?

The werewolf, Frederick, currently concerns me. He is gaining in power and I don’t fully understand his ultimate goal. I do understand that he is dangerous and volatile and that ultimately we all at P.A.W.S. will need to battle against him.

What should we expect from you in your coming book?

My book? I am but one of the players in COTULA. All the stones need to come together and I am thankful to do my part.

What authors inspired you to write your own book?

Ednah Walters. I told her about the story in my head and she told me to write it. I told her I wasn’t a writer. She then told me that if I wanted my story out there then to write it.

When you write your books do you go straight for pencil and paper or a computer? Why?

Computer because I cannot read my handwriting when I think that fast lol.

Who is your biggest support system in your life?

My husband, mom and sister. Plus my fans are amazing to.

What is the one thing you want to say to your readers?

Book Review: If the Shoe Fits

Greetings everyone. Hope you are having a good day so far. I am happy to say I got an awesome short story to share with you today for my feature review. It is by one of my fellow author friends, Stephanie Ayers. The nice thing about this story is you can snatch it up for free so make sure to grab it while you can.

The Review

Cinderella is on her way to the ball. But, something goes wrong when her twin sister shows up and the story you knew goes dark. Will Cinderella get her Prince or will someone else walk away with her prize?

Stephanie Ayers takes this traditional story and twists it to something dark. I read along thinking it was just going to be another story of Cinderella falling in love and beating her horrible step sisters. But, she surprised me with the twist of having a twin sister. And this twin sister will stop at nothing to get what she is deserved. After only going a few paragraphs in I was sitting on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. I found this story very enjoyable for it being a fairytale gone array. Highly recommend this story to anyone that wants to read a horror twist to the Cinderella story that will leave you surprised with the twisted ending.

Rating: 5 out of 5 Stars

The Book

IF_THE_SHOE_FITSIt’s no longer a question of if the shoe fits. Now it’s a question of who deserves to wear it.

What if the story you’ve always heard was wrong? What if it held a very big secret? What if Cinderella didn’t get the crown because there is another to fill her shoe?

It’s after midnight, but the band plays on. A unicorn drawn carriage awaits to carry another Ella to the ball. Destiny if what you make or it… or is it?

Book Review: Vampire Breed

The suspense of this series is killing me. I haven’t gone several days without reading at least a few chapters a day. I’ve been neglecting my writing to read these books. I am obsessed. But, our book review series must continue on as should my own writing. In a few words I will tell you about this book and my thoughts on it too. I hope you are enjoying this book review series.

The Review

Kiera is imprisoned. She doesn’t know where she is being held. Or, if her friends are even alive. Potter promised to come to her rescue, but where is he. Now hooked on the red stuff Kiera is an addict at the mercy of her captives.

She is out of her mind not knowing what is the truth or a fabrication the addiction has caused. All she knows is that a strange lycanthrope comes to her each night in her cell. Is he friend or foe Kiera doesn’t know? Realizing freedom can only come at her own hands she devises a plan for escape. Does she make it? You must read to find out.

This book in the series really showcases the loss of one’s will when addiction takes hold. It shows the struggle and harm it brings. Then tells of how the fight to remain clean is a burden that can kill. Tim O’Rourke takes you on an emotional rollercoaster that keeps you turning the page. The darkness in the series really takes hold in this book and perp-ells the series forward.

Question I had while reading this book:

Where the hell is Potter?

What happened to Luke?

Who is behind this brutal treatment?

And, who is this wolf that stalks Kiera at night?

Ranking: 5 out of 5 stars!

Author Interview: Lana Campbell

Hey guys and gals, hope you’re having an awesome day. I know I am. Today I got a special treat for you all. I’m featuring PNR author Lana Campbell in her very own author interview. Hope you will take the time to get to know this awesome author. Check out what she has to say below.

The Interview

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

Lana Campbell is the author of the Forever and a Night vampire romance series. All of her books are psychological thrillers. They each have a Christian element, a feel good message and a romance so sweet and hot they’ll leave you breathless. She loves writing paranormal romance and is an avid reader of it too. From the time she was fourteen Lana always had a romance novel in her backpack and was reading it after school, at school, wherever she could find a few minutes to read. Reading enticed her to write. She wrote her first book in 1995, but never considered publishing anything until much later. She got serious about publishing in 2014 and book one, Forever and a Night came out in 2016. There are currently six more stand alone books in her series. Lana lives in Pea Ridge AR with her oldest daughter, Jessica and a cat named Jenna.

What inspired you to become an author?

I’d have to say my love of romance books. I was a reader for years and one day decided to try my hand at writing. That was 1994. I joined a great writers group in Springfield MO, Ozark Romance Authors and learned a great deal about writing. I didn’t publish until much later though.

If you could change one thing about your life what would it be and why?

There are a number of things I would change regarding decisions I’ve made. I guess the main thing would be to love and forgive unconditionally when I was younger and didn’t understand the value of doing so.

Tell us about your latest release?

It’s a time travel romance starring vampires. Parts of it are futuristic and parts are historical, set in medieval times. Here’s the blurb to give you an idea of who the players are:
For months Ariana Chauvenski has been dealing with strange, realistic dreams of a vampire she believes is her true life mate, Lord Bryce of Aragon, who exists in a time a thousand years removed from her own, twenty seventy-seven. While the dreams are deliciously intimate and sweet, they’ve left her bereft and exhausted. She’s desperate to understand these nightly dreams and shares her problem with a girlfriend who Googles Lord Bryce of Aragon and discovers a Hungarian Lord with that name lived over a thousand years ago. Ariana is shocked when she finds out Bryce was born in the very year he claimed in one of her dreams. She contacts one of his decedents and learns he owns an ancient castle in the Carpathian mountains where she knows Bryce once lived. It operates now as a bed and breakfast. Ariana makes immediate plans to travel there, hoping she can find answers to her troubling dreams.

Once Ariana arrives at the Aragon castle deep in the Carpathian mountains, she hunts for clues and finds a portrait of the man of her dreams along with a headboard that has a beautiful waterfall carved into it. Ariana thinks the headboard must have belonged to Bryce because in every one of Ariana’s dreams, she meets Bryce at a pristine waterfall in a forest. Could Bryce have had dreams of her too?

Ariana believes the waterfall is near the castle and goes to hunt for it, but she finds far more than she bargained for when she goes spelunking in a cave behind the fall. Within the cave is a time portal that takes her back to the year eleven ninety-two. There she meets her dream lover, Bryce, along with a feral vampire who attempts to kidnap her, but Bryce thwarts him. When Ariana realizes her savior is Bryce, she believes her prayers to find her life mate have been answered. Then reality sets in. Can she remain with Bryce in his time or will she wake up one day back in her own? She knows she and Bryce are destined to be life mates and Bryce knows this too. Both fear losing each other and to make matters worse the feral vampire who tried to abduct her is terrorizing Bryce’s people and wants Ariana for his life mate. Bryce, who is a feral hunter, appointed by the Empirical Vampire Tribunal, searches for the feral relentlessly and one night uses Ariana to bait him. Ariana, Bryce and his men chase the feral vampire into the cave behind the fall. Bryce and Ariana pass through the time portal and land in the year twenty seventy-seven. What they don’t know is if the feral vampire went through the time portal as well, but Bryce is determined to find him, be it in Ariana’s time or his own.

They also face the plaguing question: where in time will they live together? Ariana grieves over the prospect of never seeing her family again and Bryce fears he’ll never find a place in a world with flying cars, holographic computers and teleportation devices. Can there be a happily ever after for Ariana and Bryce or will time or perhaps a feral vampire end up separating them forever?

How did you come up with the story within your book? What inspired your creativity?

I’ve only published stories about vampires. My take on the vampire world is unlike any story I’ve read, many of my readers say, and they like the unique angle. My kids were into Twilight and although I liked the books I didn’t like the younger characters. I wanted to write older, more mature characters, so in my first book I made the heroine forty-two with three grown girls. The ages of my protagonists range from mid-twenties to vampires over two hundred years old. Most behave maturely but not all.

Tell us about your main character in your book. What makes them unique?

Currently I have eight books in my series published. They’re all unique, but the vampires in my books all suffer from a blood disease that requires them to have human blood two to three times a week. They evolved from humans due to this blood disease and are very human-like. Some readers who are not fans of paranormal have really enjoyed the stories and my take on vampires. Most of them get their blood from vampire blood banks and take it IV.

Do you have any strange quarks you do while you write a book?

Not really. I do however get up around two or three in the morning to write before I go to work. I love writing in the middle of the night. Maybe I’m part vampire.

Who are your top three favorite authors?

Nora Robers, Christine Feehan and Hemmingway

What should we expect from you in the coming months?

More in this series. Book nine is two to three months away. I’ve also written a novella paranormal series called, Mystery of the Alien Blood. The first book should be out in a couple of weeks.

What is the one thing you want to say to your readers?

Thank you for giving a new author a chance and buying my books! I will say most are hooked. I’ve got a pretty good following and most people who try my books always come back for more.

So what do I write?

Christian paranormal romance psychological thrillers. Quite a combination, huh? Well, my vampires are most unique. I can almost promise you won’t find them typical. Some are famous billionaires, a few are OB/GYN’s for vampires. I’ve also got a computer geek, a interior decorator and oh, last but not least a thief of drugs.
Each story has bigger than life heroes and heroines and you won’t be able to help getting invested in their lives and all their drama. There’s always a villain you’ll love to hate who will stop an nothing to destroy the MC’s lives and love.

All stories have a message of redemption in them, leaving you feeling good after the drama-drenched rollercoaster ride of danger and disasters for the hero and heroine.

You’ll get no cliffhangers with my stories. All stand alone and all have happily every afters.

If you’re looking to sink into a story that will sweep you away and leave you hungry for more, try the books in my Forever and a Night series. You’ll be glad you did.
