Author Spotlight: C.J. Rose

Welcome to a new month. Can’t believe September is here already. Doesn’t even feel like August even finished. This year just keeps slipping by each day without notice. Today though I thought I would feature an author friend in her own Author Spotlight. Please check it out below and feel free to ask C.J. Rose some questions to get to know her better.

2Hi Everyone! I am RoseAnn Labriola, penning as C.J. Rose. C. J. Rose resides in Central Illinois; originally from just south of Chicago. The passion for writing took root in high school where she began writing song lyrics and poetry. C.J. found her inspiration from other fantasy and YA novels such as Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, and more. On top of literature, Rose has a keen love for all things nerdy and sci-fi. On a quiet night, you can find her curled up with an episode of Doctor Who, Arrow, Firefly, and more. C. J. also belongs to a theatre organization KVTA. The devotion to musicals and theatre has led her to be a part of over 10 shows as an actor, and over 20 as a staff person.

I am a hairstylist, with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. I have always loved writing, whether it was poems, song lyrics or stories. I decided it was time to sit down and put my thoughts to paper of a story concept I have played with for long time. In the process, it developed into the full-length version that I am proud to call my first published book, Bridge of the Gods – A Generation Son Chronicle. Now I have 3 novels in the series as well as a companion cookbook.

Author Spotlight: Aurora Jean Alexander

It’s Saturday, the first Saturday in the school year here in Sioux City, IA. My nieces went back to school just yesterday, which I think is stupid. Who starts school on a Friday and then bam it’s the weekend. Makes no sense. Well, anyway today I am giving over my blog to Paranormal Romance and Fantasy author Aurora Jean Alexander. She is going to talk about her current series in the works and her lovely kitties. Hope you have an awesome read…

I am Aurora Jean Alexander, AJ in short. I’m an author who recently published her 2nd book in ‘The Council Of Twelve’ series, Sundance.
I was quite young when I discovered I wanted to write. I doubt I can tell you one specific time or even time frame when I started writing. I felt that’s what I wanted to do. Since I lack talent in painting and drawing, I had to do something with my creativity and decided that’s the way to do it.
68377702_2339389279443846_8674632992049594368_nI’m not sure there ever was “a starting point” when I decided clearly, I wanted to be a writer. I learned to write at the age of four, and I remember developing little stories since I’m a Kindergarten kid. In school, when others complained about essays, mine were easily 6 – 10 pages long, I enjoyed it so much. When I got older, the need to write deepened, and I became more serious. Finally, I worked myself ‘up’ to the point where I am now; writing a series of 13 books with the second in the series published.68946247_468887350625362_1246627791105949696_n
For a long time already, I felt fascinated by angels. Quite some time ago I asked myself if angels would ever fall in love. And here, the basic idea for ‘The Council Of Twelve’ series was born. Of course, I needed to add a bit more to the story than ‘only’ love. And that’s what I tried to do.
Next, to being a writer, I’m also a cat mommy. At my place there are three beautiful Maine Coon cats, one of them a tomcat and two females. I call them my ‘assistants.’ They all are gorgeous, of course, and each one of them has a fairly unique personality. I love talking about my cats. Jake is a rare golden tabby with white. He is a breathtaking ‘tiger’ with huge paws, and the sweetest personality one can imagine. He is very soft and caring. When I got him I had a tiny black Persian, and he used to play with her. Even though it looked quite rough he never hurt her. And when she got sick, shortly before I had to euthanize her, she couldn’t wash anymore, and Jake helped her.
69232551_928840687470777_998835451169079296_nCharlet is the one I got after the Persian passed away. She is a Maine Coon black-tabby and has the cutest face one can imagine, surrounded by a black line like it would frame her little face. She is quite small for a Maine Coon cat, but she stood her ground quite well and showed Jake that he could not do with her whatever he liked. She is a very mommy-oriented cat and loves to cuddle and curl up on my desk.
Tjara is a beautiful black Maine Coon cat. She is a former ‘best of show’ cat. I got her after she was retired from breeding. That is how I got all my cats. Each one was already grown up when I provided them with a forever home. Tjara is a very self-confident cat. When I brought her in, it took her about half an hour, and she took the job as a ‘pack leader.’ She is proud and strong, and very elegant. With her I have my own personal mini-Panther.
Each one of them is dear to my heart and enriches my life in an indescribable way. My writing is a major part of my life, and my cats are the other major part. I’m happy for every new reader of my books, and so are my assistants. (They get treats when I celebrate new readers.)

Author Interview: Krys Fenner

Hope you are having a good weekend. I got a treat for you. I’m featuring fantasy author Krys Fenner in an author interview. Take some time out of your busy weekend and check out what she has to say.

The Interview

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I was born and raised in Florida, which is where I fell in love with writing and creating alternate worlds. It started as anything fantastical or mythological, but when I was in my junior year of high school, my creative writing professor challenged me to write something different. I had to get ideas from my friends, but I accepted and excelled at his challenge. I wrote my first ever short story dealing with a traumatic event. Since then, I’ve had a knack for incorporating tragedies into my work, even in my fantasy novels.

What is the weirdest thing you ever put into your books?

Honestly, some of the creatures are pretty strange in my Urban Fantasy series. The one that jumps out at me the most are catalyncs. They serve as guides and have a unique form.

What genre do you write in? Why?

I write in two different genres: YA Urban Fantasy and YA/NA Social Issues. One is a story I have been building for over 8 years and it’s simply because I’ve always been attracted to the unusual. The other is because there are some dark things that people as young as thirteen (sometimes younger) face every day and I want them to know they aren’t alone. My intention is for my social issues books to be conversation starters.

Who is your biggest support system in your life?

My mom. She is absolutely amazing! I probably couldn’t do half of what I do without her.

What inspired you to become an author?

I have these stories in my head that simply need to be told.

Tell us about your latest release?

This is the first book in the Guardhian Series and it starts with a thirteen-year-old girl who is just getting powers she knew nothing about. Niamh suddenly finds herself trying to figure out how to use these powers so she can save her loved ones from an unknown evil.

How did you come up with the story within your book? What inspired your creativity?

Believe it or not, this all started because I created a character (one of Niamh’s future children) for roleplaying purposes. I used to game online. Anyway, I came up with a full background for this character and a whole other world that her mother had been responsible for protecting. These characters and others served as a great way to escape and connect with people online who had a fascination with the other worldly like me.

Who are your top three favorite authors?

J.R. Ward, Colleen Hoover, and Janet Evanovich

What are you reading right now?

I’m currently working on my MFA, so I’m reading Build Your Author Platform for class.

What is the one thing you want to say to your readers?

No dream is too small or too big. Go after what you want and don’t let anyone stop you.

#AuthorAMA: What themes did you use for your story “A Father’s Protection” and how was your writing process?

I am working my way through questions over on my AMA (Ask Me Anything) platform before it goes live on Tuesday. Yes, I can’t believe it is already here and I still have a dozen questions to answer. I am hoping to get a dent in these tonight before I go to bed, so I don’t have to many when the platform goes live. This being said if you have a question on cover design, being an indie author or on my WIP submit them here. It seems with each passing day more questions appear, I will defiantly be happy to answer them all.

This post highlights a question that got my head turning and made me realize how I need to work on myself as an author. This would be an easy question hands down, however, I realized I needed to do more research into my direction for my world Tarzinëa, and my short story “A Father’s Protection”.

Here is the question:

What themes did you use for your story “A Father’s Protection” and how was your writing process?

This was my response over on the platform:

My writing process for this story differed from my usual. I started out just writing flash fiction tales featuring characters from my WIP series, Tarzinëa. This process was to help me find each character’s true voice and personality. I didn’t realize how this would turn out till DarkDeath took over and his story with Digger came to life.

When I was writing this, I wasn’t thinking about any specific theme; it took on a life of its own. However, your question led me to think about what themes this story falls into, so yes I researched.

A Father’s Protection falls into several common themes that many writers used to further their plot. The themes this story falls into are: love, power, survival, courage and heroism, and war.

I thought I would provide a breakdown for how “A Father’s Protection,” falls into each of the listed themes. These themes will surface regularly throughout the Legendary Heroes Saga, through the publication of short stories, novellas and full-length novels. However, below will comprise the breakdown for this story alone.

LOVE -This story depicts the love between Father and son. DarkDeath isn’t one for showing emotion due to it being weakness amongst the kyres. However, when the time comes to protect one he loves he will move heaven and earth to protect them.

POWER – There has been a longstanding civil war within the forest between the kyres and twin-tailed foxes. The kyres are a dominant creature and have overpowered the twin-tails throughout the history of their land. Due to his deeds on the battlefront DarkDeath became the King of Beasts and why the kyres now are the true leaders over the Forest of Ferrês.
This leads to a power struggle between the two creatures when Digger finds himself inside the twin-tails territory and DarkDeath has to get him out before SilverHide takes him down.

SURVIVAL – This story has a big survival theme, since it centers on Digger going into enemy territory and DarkDeath fighting for both their lives. It is a survival of the fittest for protecting those you love and proving you’re the dominant creature.

COURAGE AND HEROISM – DarkDeath is the hero is this tale and throwing your wellbeing out the window for your pup is my definition of heroism. He is a courageous creature on his own merit, however, DarkDeath doesn’t hesitate when it comes to protecting those he loves. It takes a lot of courage to blast into enemy territory and take a on twin-tail without a second thought, especially when he can get overrun my the deceitful beasts without notice.

WAR – This tale focuses on the bond of Father and son as stated above, however it is more a battle scene than anything.

If you have any questions related to writing, my published works, WIP or the craft of designing covers head over here to submit your questions. I will feature questions here or on my design blog, I believe will be appropriate for my audience.
