Author Spotlight: Jennifer Ann Schlag

Are you ready for Monday? It is coming up really fast this week. I just got back from going to Des Moines, IA for the Iowa State Fair. So, I am playing catch-up with a lot of things. But, enough about me. Lets get down to why you are here today. Today I am doing an Author Spotlight on Dark Fantasy author Jennifer Ann Schlag. This kind of post is a way for the author to introduce themselves to you, the reader. So, hold onto your butts and lets get to know this awesome author.

20160804_081937Hi, everyone. My name is Jenn and I write dark fantasy stories. Being a fan of fantasy all my life, I always knew I wanted to make fantasy movies or at least write them. After I decided to take my first fantasy screenplay Goval: Parallel Destiny and turn it into a novel, I realized that I could expand on my dark fantasy stories in ways that a movie simply cannot. Having read books before bed as a child, I already had a love for reading, and with writing my short stories and people liking them, writing a novel came easy to me. I am way too critical of my own work, but that’s a good thing. When I am not writing I am obsessed with photography and sunsets. I have a strong passion towards animals so I spend a lot of time with my fur babies. When I need to de-stress myself, which is often as a writer, I play video games, and I pvp in the online game World of Warcraft, as well as play the online game League of Legends. I tend to enjoy movies better when watching alone because I hate being interrupted. I usually write to instrumental music and I can be found singing along to my favorite songs in the car or at the computer. Inspiration is a funny thing. Some writers are inspired by other writers and some are inspired when they watch movies. For me inspiration comes from everywhere. The inspiration for Goval came when I went to England in 2002. Goval is one of those stories that has a deeper, hidden meaning if you scratch enough at the surface. I would consider it my magnum opus. There was a time that I wanted to be an archaeologist or a scientist. My love for philosophy sometimes makes it hard for me to carry on a conversation with someone. My mind works faster than I’d like it to. That’s especially hard when trying to write a scene. My favorite movie of all time is The Princess Bride. It literally has everything to offer you. Adventure, romance, humor, suspense, horror, and fantasy. I can’t say that I have a favorite book but my favorite author is Stephen King. I don’t consider myself a trendsetter. I don’t always keep up with fashion because I like the relaxed, casual look too much. If I could live anywhere other than this planet, I’d rather be a travelling soul that explores the universe. I almost forgot to mention wolves. The wolf has been my favorite for a long time. It both terrifies me and exhilarates me. I simply love them. I donate to the wolf conversation in New York.

Something I’ve learned from this self-publishing experience is there’s a lot of competition out there. And you really need to do your research. You should know that it takes a lot more than writing an amazing book. Or having an amazing cover. Don’t do what I did. Write a book and try to find fans. Build your fanbase then give them snippets of your book or give them short stories. How do you find your fanbase? You have to network. Either with other writers or join groups who like read books. Befriend a writer whose books you like. Ask them if they wouldn’t mind mentioning you in their blogs or newsletter. Be kind and tell them you’d love to review their book in return for the favor. Remember, us writers love reviews. Good and bad. I came into this ass backwards. I published my first book Night First: The Divinity of Damien Calla not knowing anyone really. Then I thought people would just find it in Amazon and buy it. Didn’t happen. Network. Market. So, where I am happy to be writing and telling my stories, I do wish to be very successful where I can say I earn a lot of money doing the thing I love most. We all want it. Whether you are a writer, teacher, actor, scientist, or someone shining shoes on the street. We all want to be successful and be able to pay our bills and enjoy life. I hope to touch everyone with my written words, and whether you love or hate my books, I know I have achieved my goal: I got a reaction out of you. Happy reading and do pick up one of my books if you like mystery, fantasy, and not knowing what may happen next. I have plenty more to come.

Book Spotlight: Heir of Dragmoore

Today I am featuring a favorite author of mine and her book, Heir of Dragmoore. Not only is the book awesome check out the cover below. It just takes my breath away. Well anyway Jennifer Ann Schlag is sharing a special excerpt with us today. Hope you enjoy.

Excerpt

Kip glides out onto a rock sitting in the water close to shore. Talen stops right before the water hits her shoes. Stares out at the sea, at Kip, at the sun making the water shine. It overwhelms her to the point that she starts crying. She can sense that someone is coming. She turns and sees Remy searching through the sand.
“Kip, come and stay on the land.”
Remy sits down on the sand while holding some shells. Talen joins him.
“I don’t want to appear rude. I am thankful that you are looking out for me. So thank you.”
“That tale the woman told us about; the brother and sister, the shell necklaces. It got me thinking.”
“About what?”
“About us.”
Talen shivers. And it’s not from the cold sea air.
“It doesn’t matter. Let’s find Deegus and be on our way.” Remy heads for the establishments.
Kip runs over to Talen and kicks sand up at her face. He buries his face in the sand.
What is wrong?
“I think I’ve hurt the prince’s feelings. I don’t want to be seen as a bad person. Oh, how I can’t wait to be free of all this and live with the Masters.”
Kip shakes the sand off him. If you live with the Masters, will we still be friends?
“Of course. Why would that change?”
Because the Masters are dangerous people. My father told me about them. My mother warned me to stay away from them.
“But I am bringing you with me to the Veiled Haven. To show them that I can speak to you and then they must come back with me to Dragmoore.”
What for? Your father is free. The king is dying. The proof you wanted doesn’t matter anymore. You want to go to the Veiled Haven because you want to feel as if you belong somewhere. You have a loving father, friends, and you have the prince who clearly likes you. And you have me, Talen. Please let that be enough. Don’t go to the Veiled Haven. It changes people.
“I must go there at least once. If you feel like I am in danger at any point, you tell me and I will leave. I promise.”

Author Interview: Jennifer Ann Schlag

It’s Thursday! The middle of the week is gone and I got another awesome featured today. I am featuring a good friend of mine from New York. Hope you will stop in and check out Jennifer Ann Sclag in her author interview.

The Interview

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am from New York and, although it can be a rough place to live, I can’t imagine living anywhere else. Growing up around books and movies, I easily fell in love with storytelling from an early age. I wrote short stories throughout my childhood but wrote my first professional screenplay in 2002 (Goval: Parallel Destiny). After abandoning writing for a few years, I picked it back up and wrote the novel version to that screenplay, and that is when aspiring filmmaker became aspiring author. I am seriously addicted to YouTube and Netflix. It is often a distraction for my writing time. Sometimes people ask where I come up with my story ideas and I simply say I find inspiration from everything around me. Life is inspiration.

What genre do you write in? Why?

Dark fantasy/fantasy. Although I grew up watching sci-fi movies, fantasy movies have always been my favorite. Fantasy has a way of making you forget reality for a while, and we all need that. It transports you into another world and, for a moment, you believe in magic and that the impossible is possible.

What inspired you to become an author?

Watching movies and reading books. From there the passion for reading grew and the desire to write stories blossomed.

Tell us about your latest release?

Many who have travelled into the Veiled Haven have never returned, and those that do are forever changed. When opportunity arises for Talen to venture there with a spoiled prince, secrets are revealed about both of them which will change their position in life and what they mean to each other.

How did you come up with the story within your book? What inspired your creativity?

I saw a friend’s premade book cover for sale with a woman and dragon on the cover and instantly the story came to me.

Tell us about your main character in your book. What makes them unique?

Talen is a young woman who could always talk to animals, but mastering a talent such as talking to every animal in the world, even the sacred ones, is a skill only the Masters of the Veiled Haven can acquire. She often gets herself in trouble but manages to find a way out of it barely scarred or bruised.

Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years as a writer?

Writing more books. Hopefully very successful before those 5 years.

Who is your biggest support system in your life?

My facebook author friends.

Who are your top three favorite authors?

Stephen King, Jordan Frost, and Shakespeare.

What is the one thing you want to say to your readers?

Always keep a foot in the past, your heart in the present, and your mind in the future.
