The Courage to Move On

Hope everyone is having an awesome weekend so far. Today I am featuring Romance Author Mia Jones book ‘The Courage to Move On’. She was nice enough to share the first chapter of this romance book. Check it out below.

Excerpt

Lexi felt good, even kind of peaceful and rested. Rested, for the first time in a long time. Sleeping through the night, not waking with terror streaking through her veins and dark images burning her mind from nightmares.

She slowly stretched, squinting her eyes to avoid the morning light coming in through the window. She froze with her arms raised over her head, alarm coursing through her. Why was she still dressed in the clothes she’d worn the night before?

A frown puckered her brow. She rubbed her forehead with both hands trying to ward off the headache that started to pound in her temples. Why was there a void of time that she couldn’t remember of last night or how she’d gotten home? Her heart seized, then galloped out of control. Color leached from her face. Lexi sat up slowly and looked anxiously around her bedroom, her eyes slowly scanning. Nothing looked different or out of place, but something was off. A feeling or smell of another person having been here.

Her stomach tightened and she swallowed as waves of nausea rolled through her stomach. A shiver of pure terror, stark and vivid ran down her spine as sweat broke out on her forehead. She took a deep breath and tried to keep her fragile control, ‘don’t freak out, don’t freak out, don’t freak out’ she said quietly.

Lexi thought about calling the police but what would she say? ‘I think someone might have been in my house.’ When asked why she thought this, ‘well I woke up with my clothes on that I’d worn the night before. Or, I think I smell something or someone.’ They’d think she was on drugs or just plain crazy.

She stood slowly, apprehensive, snatching the baseball bat, she kept by the bed. She caught herself with her hand on the mattress, preventing herself from tripped over the boots she’d worn the night before, sitting on the floor by the bed. She had always put her shoes away in the closet, needing order and control in her life any way she could get it.

Holding the bat up, both of her hands gripping it tightly, sweat rolling down her cheek, Lexi made her way to her bedroom door, opening it slowly, peering out. She couldn’t hear anything, everything seemed normal and untouched. She walked through the house, slowly, silently, making sure everything was as she’d left it, nothing out of place, and that it was still locked up, before moving slowly back to her bedroom.

She sat down on her bed, her legs shaking uncontrollable, exhausted from the fear that beat through her body. Trembling, she placed the bat next to her on the floor. Lexi’s shoulders were tightly hunched and her hands curled on her thighs. She struggled to remember the night before. She’d been hiding behind a stack of old dirty tires sitting next to a warehouse, a warehouse that she’d been watching for weeks. She felt she was getting closer to finding the man who had destroyed her world. So close to finally getting the answers she desperately needed to move on with her life.

The name Damon Beck was burnt into her mind forever. Lexi search for pictures of him in the paper, finding a few in the business section. It was a face she would ever forget. To get closure, she felt she needed to see him convicted, put behind bars for the rest of his life.

Lexi knew an investigator who’d helped her in the past with some of her cases. He knew a man who had eventually sold her the information. One of the many buildings and businesses Beck owned, this warehouse was rumored to be one he used often. The seller had cautioned her about Beck, imploring her to let the police take care of him. When he couldn’t change her mind, he told her to watch her back, Beck had no soul and absolutely no conscience. He then described a few things he knew the man had done, trying to scare her. Lexi had come close to turning away, sheer terror streaking through her, and letting Tommy, a friend in the DA’s office, find evidence on the man, like he’d promised.

But when she’d found out about Beck, something in her had come alive. Something burned through the mass of ice inside her, kept her going, made her want to live again. Was it vengeance that started the awakening? She didn’t know, and she didn’t care. Lexi did know that if she sat back and did nothing, she’d lose more of herself than she had already.

She thought back to the night before. Rubbing her pulsing temples, she tried to remember. It had been really dark, the kind you felt could smother you if not for the few glimpses of dull light shining out the warehouse windows. She’d stood bent at the waist, hearing voices in the building. But they were too far away for her to understand what they were saying. She was getting her courage up, deciding on the best route to take without making noise, ready to move a little closer to the doorway— and then nothing, Lexi tried to remember what happened next.

Lexi vaguely remembered, she stood when she had suddenly sensed someone behind her, her muscles tightening, ready to escape, then someone clasped her shoulder. She remembered the streak of fear that shot through her veins, thoughts of her death coursed through her mind and then nothing.

She rubbed her forehead, confused. The hand had been huge, covering her entire shoulder. From the size of the hand it had to have been a man. A very large man. She couldn’t believe she wasn’t hurt or dead? Everybody kept telling her what a monster Beck was. If he had been the one to catch her, she assumed she wouldn’t be here in her house and her body untouched. But how the hell did she get home? The fear ate at her. But the worst part for her, right now, she thought, was the fact that she couldn’t remember?

Lexi closed her eyes, the hand had tightened so quickly she didn’t have a chance to scream or fight before darkness had taken her. What the hell had he done to her?

Lexi looked at the clock, grimacing, if she didn’t hurry she’d be late for work, and work was the one thing she had in her life that was steady and secure, and kept her going day after day. She rushed to take her shower and dress. She grabbed her purse, briefcase, and a Pop Tart on her way out the door. She looked back one last time with her hand on the doorknob, no one was in the house now, she had checked. But why then, did it still feel like someone was still here, if not in person, then in essence? She shook her head, anxiety tightening her stomach when a wave of apprehension swept through her. Turning, she closed and locked the door.

Author Interview with Mia Jones

Welcome to another awesome Friday. Today I am sitting down with Romance Author Mia Jones in her very own interview. Check her out below and get to know what inspires her. Happy reading :).

Interview

Tell us a little bit about yourself?
I have three sons. I’ve been married to my husband for 30 years. We have lived in the same house for 29 of them. I started writing when I was a teenager. It helped get me through some rough times and I’ve never stopped. It’s only in the last few years that I’ve tried to publish any of my work and I had to be pushed into it by my mom and a sister. I never thought I was good enough to be published. After I sent them a book, amazingly I received an acceptance letter a few days later. So far, I have published 11 novels, and 4 anthologies. I’m signed up to do two more anthologies and am working on several books that I hope to get published in the near future. My hobbies are horseback riding, gardening, scrapbooking, cooking, and of course reading. My favorite pastime is spending time with my family.

What genre do you write in? Why?
Romance. Every story in my head is about love. I really think it helps people get away from their lives for a bit and feel good. My books always have happy endings. I dislike a book ending in a negative manner because I know it affects me and I assume other people also. There’s enough sadness in the world. I just want to bring a bit of happiness to people.

If you could change one thing about your life what would it be and why?
I would love to bring my brother and dad back. I miss them terribly.

How did you come up with the story within your books? What inspired your creativity?
I’ve no idea what inspires me. Every story is stuck in my head and won’t go away until I put it down on paper.

Who inspires you to write in your normal day life?
My husband and children. I want my boys to follow their dreams like I’m doing at the moment. It took a long time to get here but I feel incredibly blessed to be able to live my dream now.

What authors inspired you to write your own book?
Linda Howard, Julie Garwood, Lynda Chance are just some of them.

What is the weirdest thing you ever put into your books?
I can’t think of anything.

Who is your biggest support system in your life?
My husband.

Are you Indie Published or Traditional? Why did you choose this route?
I am published through Crazy Ink Publishing and Fiery Vision Publishing. I heard such good things about these publishers and I’m glad I went with them. They are both great.

What should we expect from you in the coming months?
A lot more books. I’m working on a 3-book series and several stand-alone books.

Author Spotlight: C.J. Rose

Welcome to a new month. Can’t believe September is here already. Doesn’t even feel like August even finished. This year just keeps slipping by each day without notice. Today though I thought I would feature an author friend in her own Author Spotlight. Please check it out below and feel free to ask C.J. Rose some questions to get to know her better.

2Hi Everyone! I am RoseAnn Labriola, penning as C.J. Rose. C. J. Rose resides in Central Illinois; originally from just south of Chicago. The passion for writing took root in high school where she began writing song lyrics and poetry. C.J. found her inspiration from other fantasy and YA novels such as Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, and more. On top of literature, Rose has a keen love for all things nerdy and sci-fi. On a quiet night, you can find her curled up with an episode of Doctor Who, Arrow, Firefly, and more. C. J. also belongs to a theatre organization KVTA. The devotion to musicals and theatre has led her to be a part of over 10 shows as an actor, and over 20 as a staff person.

I am a hairstylist, with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. I have always loved writing, whether it was poems, song lyrics or stories. I decided it was time to sit down and put my thoughts to paper of a story concept I have played with for long time. In the process, it developed into the full-length version that I am proud to call my first published book, Bridge of the Gods – A Generation Son Chronicle. Now I have 3 novels in the series as well as a companion cookbook.

Saints and Curses

Welcome to another Saturday. Hope everyone is enjoying there weekend so far. Today I am featuring Alexis Lantgen’s book of short stories, ‘Saints and Curses’. She was nice enough to share a short sneak peek into one of the short stories that graces the interior of this awesome book. Check out ‘Grackle’ below…

An Excerpt

Grackle

20190811_130622(0)Jane wasn’t surprised when Michael pulled out his wand and brandished it at her. She had told him she wanted him to move out, and he could be volatile. After all, that’s why she wanted him to move out in the first place.
She’d come prepared. She’d chosen a restaurant known for its magical barriers and purchased a counterspell from the drugstore. The spell came with a potion that smelled like off-brand hand cream and a charm that looked like a refrigerator magnet. It had an inspirational slogan scrawled across it that read “Just believe in yourself and your dreams will materialize,” which was clearly written by someone who never remembered their dreams.
Nonetheless, the potion and the flimsy charm had given Jane enough confidence that she only stammered a little when she asked Michael to move out.
“I mean, neither of us is happy, right? It’s not about you, we’re just not good together, you know? Umm, I mean, you hate my friends, and the other day you called me boring.”
He’d said other things as well, things she found too painful to repeat out loud, but boring seemed damning enough. She plucked at her skirt beneath the table, then darted a glance in Michael’s direction to see how he was taking it.
He clenched his jaw, and he had gritted his teeth so hard she could hear them grinding. She stammered into a silence that stretched before her like an abyss.
Jane panicked. She wanted to take it all back, to tell him she didn’t mean it, that she was wrong, stupid. But his gaze weighed down on her until her tongue felt too heavy to move. A small, rebellious, suicidally stupid part of her wondered if she wanted to take it all back anyway.
When he pulled out his wand, she was relieved. That’s how it would be, then. But she had a spell he didn’t know about and he couldn’t do much in a restaurant anyway, could he? That’s why she’d chosen a public place, like her mother had always said.20190824_120742
The spell he shot at her blasted away her meager charm. The heat of it burned her face. She ducked beneath the table, scrambling away as their waitress drew her wand to settle things down. But Michael was quick. He hurled another spell at her, one hot enough to set off the sprinkler system and summon the security gargoyles. It hit Jane in the back of her knee, the one that never seemed the same after she’d twisted it freshman year.
A flash of light. Blinding pain. Then the disorienting feeling of being entirely the wrong size, and weight, and shape. She threw her hands up, but she didn’t have hands, only scraggly black wings.
Chaos surrounded her. One of the security gargoyles tackled Michael, snapping his wand in two. The police were called. The Magisterium was summoned. Jane flapped around the room. The people in the restaurant loomed over her like giants, hulking and terrifying. Some of them batted at her, shrieking. Others grabbed at her. One pulled out her tailfeather, which hurt. A breeze stirred around the room, and she saw an open window. She struggled towards it, flapping and hopping, but when she reached the windowsill, she hesitated and looked back.
“Even as a bird you’re ugly!” Michael yelled. “Fucking ugly ass grackle–I should have–” A gargoyle clamped its heavy clay hand over his mouth, or maybe punched him in the face; it was hard to tell what it intended. Jane looked out the window, felt the breeze under her wings, and glided away.
It’s not that she intended to stay a bird, forever cursed by her ex. But when she thought about going back to her and Michael’s tiny, overpriced apartment or to the dreary grey building where she worked, she couldn’t quite bring herself to do it. Especially when she thought about the enormous magical med bills she’d rack up to get back her human body. She’d have to file for bankruptcy or sell herself into thralldom. And the recent economic downturn had driven down the going rate for souls.

Character Interview with Skye from The Light Realm Series

Happy hump day to you! Today I am sitting down with Skye from Karen DuBose’s book series, ‘The Light Realm’. Please help me in welcoming her and hope you have fun getting know her ins and outs. Happy reading :).

The Interview

Who are you and what makes you great?
I’m Skye from The Light Realm Series. I don’t consider myself great. I get by like everyone else. Some people say I’m great because of the power I weld. But for me it’s a burden.

What is your soul purpose in life?
To bring back the balance of light and dark. If I don’t the dark will destroy our world.

What kind of adventures have you had that stay with you till this day?
I have been sheltered for most of my life. Everything I did was watched. I didn’t get to do anything until I ran away from the Coven that thought they could use me. The adventures we had to get to where we are now has been crazy. Between the Starborn Coven coming after us and the dark source. I’m suprized we made it to a safe place for now.

Do you have a love interest? If you do please tell us about him/her or why you don’t.
Yes! I found my bond mate. He was definitely not my choice, but I wouldn’t trade him for the world. Adrik is one of the people I was supposed to destroy to turn back the balance. The prophecy was all wrong.

Tell us about your journey you are on and how it has helped you grow as a person.
I still have to bring the balance back. I have never let it get to my head. I knew being born this powerful takes a lot of responsibility. In a way I grew up before my time. I didn’t get to do the things normal witches or humans got to do. Knowing all of this has changed me. Meeting Drik changed who I was. I think for the good. But our journey isn’t even close to being over. There is one person I have to take out. Arik’s father Zaryn. He is more powerful than we thought.

What kind of creatures do you see on a daily basis?
If you consider witches and warlocks with dark magic to be creatures, than I don’t see any.

Who do you look up too? Why?
I looked up to my mother until recently. She was a strong woman. At least at the time I thought she was. Something has changed in her after she found out Drik and I are soulmates.

If you had one thing about yourself that you would want to change what would it be?
I wish I could change my confidence. I lack a lot of it.

Who is your ultimate enemy? Why?
Zaryn is my ultimate enemy. He has been trying to kill me since birth. He is the reason the balance is off. Now that Drik and I are together, he is after his son to.

What should we expect from you in your coming book?
Hopefully I get the balance back and I can enjoy life with my family without hunting people down.

The Book

51XVzKQE61LSkye’s whole life she has been told she was the one to defeat the dark source. She took pride in getting rid of evil. Until the coven that has been her life tries to use her for their selfish ways.
Turning her back on them felt right at the time. Maybe she made a huge mistake, but she was never letting them use her.
Drik’s life has been nothing but fun and games. Spreading evil as much as he can. He knows there is a light witch that is destined to destroy him, but he has come up with a plan to change that destiny.
Will their souls handle what is destined for them or will they destroy each other any way they can?
Wherever her light goes, his darkness will follow.
