Character Interview

Chelsea Bishop
From the Dead Oaks Terrors Series

Who are you and what makes you great?
My name is Chelsea Bishop. I grew up in this crazy town called Dead Oaks. Last Halloween I came home from college to see some friends who moved away. It turned into a gruesome night where only a few of us survived. I suppose that’s what makes me great, I’m a survivor.

What is your soul purpose in life?
I want to uncover the dark truths about our hometown. Something isn’t right here. Whatever is taking place in Dead Oaks seems to focus its attention on the children most of all. I want to stop it and keep our town safe!

What kind of adventures have you had that stay with you till this day?
The events that took place on that Halloween still haunt me. Since then, I witnessed the terror brought forth by a Ouija board, a poor snake the evil in our town twisted, and recently faced Scary Joe, a scarecrow possessed by the spirit of a local murderer. I think of the losses the town has suffered everyday. It also makes me fight harder to uncover the truth and put an end to the terror.

60349706_2020506294725810_5572741318058180608_nDo you have a love interest? If you do please tell us about him/her or why you don’t.
I don’t know if you’d call him a love interest, but there is Caleb Rollins. He’s a deputy and long time friend. We were both involved in the massacre on Halloween and have since become close while we fight against the evil in Dead Oaks. I can’t deny that he’s a cutie and fun to be around. Just don’t tell him that. He gets a big head about things like that. He doesn’t need anything else to make him full of himself.

Tell us about your journey you are on and how it has helped you grow as a person.
In the beginning, when I came home, my plan was to visit and leave. That all changed when I realized so many were in danger. I’m not a superhero or anything, but I am smart. I’m good at figuring things out. Helping those in Dead Oaks who needs me fills me with a sense of purpose. I stay close to them and want to see the best for them. I guess that’s how I’ve grown. Instead of cutting ties and running away to safety, I’m becoming one of the protectors.

What kind of creatures do you see on a daily basis?
Ghosts. This town is full of them. I even think my shop, Wicked Treasures is haunted. The freakiest thing though had to be the scarecrow, Scary Joe, the Night Stalker. Seeing that monstrosity walking around was freakier than I ever imagined!

Who do you look up too? Why?
Again, don’t tell him, but Caleb. He’s fearless, even when he’s scared to death. If someone is in danger, he throws caution to the wind and only wants to save them. I guess in a way you could say he’s our hero.

If you had one thing about yourself that you would want to change what would it be?
I suppose it would be my need to know everything. According to Caleb, I’m just nosy as hell. I call it eager to learn.

Who is your ultimate enemy? Why?
A person? I don’t have one. The only true enemy I have is the evil gripping this town.

What should we expect from you in your coming book?
Night Stalker, which just released tells the story of Scary Joe, the Night Stalker of Dead Oaks. My part in the story? I’m right in the thick of things helping Caleb try to stop the monster loose in our town and save the teenagers he has his sights set on.

Author Interview w/ E.L. DuBois

Happy Sunday everyone. Hope everyone is having a good weekend. Today I am sitting down with multi-genre author E.L. DuBois. She is an awesome author and hope you enjoy learning about her. Happy reading everyone. 🙂

Author Interview

Tell us a little bit about yourself?
Thank you so much for asking. I was born and raised in Texas, where I still live. I was born in a small town, but my family moved to the Houston area when I was seven, so I grew up a city girl. About five years ago we all migrated back to the small town where I was born. I’m a mom & wife, family is very important to me. I come from a small family so I’m really close with my parents & brother (who is also a writer). My husband is my writing partner so that makes for an interesting dynamic. We are all creative so it is good to have a close knit group to bounce ideas off of. I love to travel, but I do not get to do it nearly enough. I’m a full-time writer so my days are full of coffee, chucks(I have a collection, and the color I am wearing usually represents my mood), and the menagerie of characters & stories that live in my mind. Lol

What genre do you write in? Why?
Romance, Paranormal/Horror/Thriller. I really love both genres and those are the stories/characters that come to me. My debut novel was my memoir told as a dark fairy-tale. It will always be the hardest, and most important story I tell. I had to write an extremely personal, emotional story to realize my dreams, and heal. The process helped me to let go, it was my way of giving the girl I had been some semblance of justice. When I wrote it, I pulled no punches. It is raw, gritty, and honest. When I finished, I told myself, “If this helps, or give’s even one person hope, or changes their perception of domestic violence, then I have done something” and it has. The first review I received, I cried, because I had done just that. So, now, I get to write fun, romantic, action-packed stories that are unapologetically southern, laugh out-loud funny, and unique.

What inspired you to become an author?
I think I have always wanted to be a writer. I just didn’t realize it until I was in my early 20’s and got the idea for Ransom, TX. I told my little brother, we bounced ideas off of each other. He is a script writer as well as an author so I suggested he should write the script, he suggested I should write the book. So I did, lol, then life happened and I had to abandon the dream. Once I wrote my debut novel “The Glass Mask: Monsters Lurk Beneath” a door was opened for me to finally release Ransom, and the rest is history.

Tell us about your latest release?
Crossroads is about life changes, and how we sometimes find exactly what we need, when we need it, and that we usually never see it coming. It is a story of a normal girl trying to navigate her own grief, and a famous/jaded lead singer of a southern rock band and his road to recovery through a series of people he meets at a remote resort. He has lost his way and is on a destructive spiral of grief, drugs, and denial. Through sobriety, love, and some crazy interactions he finds something he didn’t realize he was missing, or even needed. It is told in two parts, part one is everything before sobriety, part two is everything after. So it was almost like writing the same character with two very different personalities. My WIP is the second book in the series, it is called No Strings and centers around the guitarist in the band. It is more lighthearted so I am having fun with it. I like to joke that I am a method writer, I live and breath my characters emotions, so to be stuck in the mind of two grief stricken lost souls for Crossroads was emotionally taxing. I kept telling myself, just get through the sad and you will get to tell the happy. I was probably insufferable to be around but my family understands. My husband gets it lol, he wrote the outline/base for Crossroads and then handed the characters/story over to me and he is so amazing he let me put my own spin on it, bleed angst and emotions all over his perfectly normal characters. The fact that he let me have the characters/story and do that says a lot about how wonderful he is.

How did you come up with the story within your books? What inspired your creativity?
Inspiration comes from everywhere. I will wake up with my characters knocking on my mental walls telling me to get up and write. I am also plagued with waking up with random songs in my head. I love music, but I often feel like the songs are a representation of what I’m feeling or the characters are feeling for that day of writing. If it is a random song I haven’t heard in a while I immediately add it to my playlist and play it on repeat while I write. This is one of the main reasons I include a playlist for the readers. I want them to be able to flip to it and know exactly what moment in the book it inspired. I have so many stories I want to write, characters that have formed that I have notebooks full of stories. I will be writing a story, a character will form within that story and suddenly I know exactly how they look, sound, their backstory, and future story.

Tell us about your main character in your book. What makes them unique?
Tyler “Twitch” Matthews in Crossroads is that good looking talented guy who has no concept of real life. He has been famous for so long that every day tasks are not something he thinks about. He is an artist so immersed in his grief and addiction that everything else kind of takes a backseat to it. Until he meets Gia, she is a catalyst to the first steps of recovery. He doesn’t do it for her, or because of her. She just helps guide him in the right direction, lays down the law, gives him the structure he has been lacking. Grounds him and brings him back to reality, Twitch in turn reminds Gia of her dreams, and that she shouldn’t give up on them. Their love story is not conventional at all. I knew it wouldn’t be a typical happily ever-after. They take it day by day.

What authors inspired you to write your own book?
I am a huge romance fan. I love most genres. I would have to say that my list is endless. I love well developed characters, stories, etc. Characters that give me all the feels… lol… If I had to name a few I would say, Emma Chase, LJ Shen, Emma Hart, L.A. Cotton. They are all amazing authors. I think that anyone brave enough to tell their stories and put them out there for the world should be read, appreciated, and applauded.

Who is your biggest support system in your life?
My family! And my fans! I love my readers, and I love hearing from them. Bookstagrammers and bloggers are a true gift. I love them. They have been so supportive. I’d like to give a special shoutout to @Tweezyread (Twee has been truly amazing), @themommabookclub, @cantquitbooks, @musingsofthemb, @kinkygirlsbookobsession, and K.M Jenkins of course! 🙂 My narrator Sarah Sampino, and the cover model for What Would It Take Brandon English have been wonderful as well. I cannot put into words how much I appreciate everything!

What should we expect from you in the coming months?
No Strings is my next release and I cannot wait for the world to meet my characters. Gahhh, I am so excited to tell their story, it’s definitely a doozy lol. All the feels!

What is the one thing you want to say to your readers?
THANK YOU! Those two words will never be enough! Y’all are all the things! Everything! Much love and appreciation from the bottom of my heart. XO ~EL~

Author Interview with Mia Jones

Welcome to another awesome Friday. Today I am sitting down with Romance Author Mia Jones in her very own interview. Check her out below and get to know what inspires her. Happy reading :).

Interview

Tell us a little bit about yourself?
I have three sons. I’ve been married to my husband for 30 years. We have lived in the same house for 29 of them. I started writing when I was a teenager. It helped get me through some rough times and I’ve never stopped. It’s only in the last few years that I’ve tried to publish any of my work and I had to be pushed into it by my mom and a sister. I never thought I was good enough to be published. After I sent them a book, amazingly I received an acceptance letter a few days later. So far, I have published 11 novels, and 4 anthologies. I’m signed up to do two more anthologies and am working on several books that I hope to get published in the near future. My hobbies are horseback riding, gardening, scrapbooking, cooking, and of course reading. My favorite pastime is spending time with my family.

What genre do you write in? Why?
Romance. Every story in my head is about love. I really think it helps people get away from their lives for a bit and feel good. My books always have happy endings. I dislike a book ending in a negative manner because I know it affects me and I assume other people also. There’s enough sadness in the world. I just want to bring a bit of happiness to people.

If you could change one thing about your life what would it be and why?
I would love to bring my brother and dad back. I miss them terribly.

How did you come up with the story within your books? What inspired your creativity?
I’ve no idea what inspires me. Every story is stuck in my head and won’t go away until I put it down on paper.

Who inspires you to write in your normal day life?
My husband and children. I want my boys to follow their dreams like I’m doing at the moment. It took a long time to get here but I feel incredibly blessed to be able to live my dream now.

What authors inspired you to write your own book?
Linda Howard, Julie Garwood, Lynda Chance are just some of them.

What is the weirdest thing you ever put into your books?
I can’t think of anything.

Who is your biggest support system in your life?
My husband.

Are you Indie Published or Traditional? Why did you choose this route?
I am published through Crazy Ink Publishing and Fiery Vision Publishing. I heard such good things about these publishers and I’m glad I went with them. They are both great.

What should we expect from you in the coming months?
A lot more books. I’m working on a 3-book series and several stand-alone books.

The Author

69268462_493997751146668_24248062503288832_nMia Jones was born and raised in Iowa and still resides there with her husband and children. She’s an author of contemporary romance novels and devotes hours to creating steamy novels with happy endings that she hopes entertain people, make them laugh and sometimes cry, but always ends the book feeling good.
Mia started writing when she was thirteen. She found writing was a way to comfort herself during her rough teenage years, and she never stopped. It was only when her mother and sister pushed her did she finally send in a novel, and to her surprise, people enjoyed it and asked for more.
You can usually find her at her home in the country surrounded by her family and many animals and the majority of the time in her quiet little office, conjuring up whole new interesting families and communities.
Some of Mia’s favorite things are spending time with her family, her dogs, riding horses, gardening, cooking, hiking and, of course, writing and reading romance novels.

Author Interview: Ariel Paiement

Heya everyone, today I have a special treat. I will be featuring fantasy author Ariel Paiement in a special author interview. Check it out below to get to know more about this author and her upcoming release.

The Interview

Please introduce yourself.

I’m Ariel Paiement, a fantasy author who dabbles occasionally in sci-fi or historical fiction. I’ve been writing since I was a little kid, and I’ve enjoyed every minute of the journey to get to where I am. Yes, even the moments when I was sitting there crying because a scene just wouldn’t work. I appreciated those moments more after they were over, of course.

What inspired your latest release?

It was inspired by a combination of world-building information from Pathway of the Moon–first in the companion series Annals of Alcardia–and a prompt from Wattpad’s Open Novella Contest. The prompt was called Myths of the Old World and had to do with the idea of truth being a lie and the lie becoming truth. The prompt really pulled together the idea with the other historical events I knew happened in Alcardia’s past. Those events tied into Pathway of the Moon, and so this story gave me a chance to “share the facts” while still pulling the reader into the world in a fun, immersive way.

Tell us about your main character.

I have two. Kaidan and Zerua are a husband and wife Seeker team, and they work together on various historical sites around the world of Alcardia. They work for a historical and Seeker guild (their version of an archaeological society) known as the Society of the Learned or just the Society for short. The two of them get themselves into all kinds of trouble when they dug up a diary that belonged to Queen Bane of Ashkarith. Both of them are witty, though in different ways, and enjoy a good laugh. They don’t always agree on what constitutes a good laugh, but they definitely enjoy life. Zerua has a tendency to worry while Kaidan is usually the even-keeled one who calms her down. She’s also the fiestier of the two. But Kaidan is more impatient than she is. They balance each other out and work well together most of the time.

Why did you decide to become a writer?

You know, I don’t really know. I’ve been writing since I was a kid, and I’ve always loved stories. Whether reading, writing, or just daydreaming, I’ve always been one to immerse myself in other worlds and other lives, even when they were fictional. This just naturally spilled over into a desire to keep writing and to write stories that others like me could enjoy. I guess as time as gone on, I’ve stuck with it out of both enjoyment and a desire to share with children and young adults the same joy of reading that was imparted to me as a child. My hope is that my books will be something that even reticent readers will be able to enjoy.

What is your writing process like?

Very structured. I’m definitely a plotter. I like to use a combination of methods. Usually I start out with the Snowflake method from Randy Ingermanson and move on to using a mix of Rachel Aaron’s and Jordan Rosenfeld’s methods of planning for plotting out my scenes. I won’t start writing a chapter until I have all the scenes plotted out, and I rarely start a book unless I have everything from character charts to a synopsis done. The only thing that doesn’t have to be completely finished before I can start is that scene list.

Do you have any strange quarks you do while you write a book?

I talk to myself. Sometimes I can be loud about it too. My sister will be watching YouTube in the room, and I’ll just suddenly set the computer aside and start ranting about how annoyed I am at something a character did. She always laughs because it’s my book, so I did it to myself. But yeah… I definitely talk to myself a lot even if it’s incoherent mumbling.

I’m also really particular about organization. I’m a plotter all the way, so everything needs to be in place for each scene before I start writing. Beyond that, I’m really particular about how my writing space is organized. Everything needs to be neat and uncluttered for me to work. If I’m sitting on my bed, it has to be made and straightened out regardless of whether I’m under the covers or not. Anywhere else, the surface has to be clean. I can’t think or focus on writing if it isn’t. It just makes me antsy.

What genre does your book fall into?

High fantasy in this case, though other books within the Alcardian universe could potentially be considered portal fantasy or alternate world fantasy since the universe is connected to ours and others. But for Bane of Ashkarith, it’s just high fantasy.

Why did you decide to write within that genre?

High fantasy and fantasy in general allows for a lot of freedom to create and build worlds. I really enjoy that. World-building, when done well, is one of my favorite parts about reading fantasy, and I love having the chance to bring what I’ve learned from reading well-written fantasy into my own work. Plus, fantasy is what I know the best. I’ve been reading it since I was seven or eight, and it’s remained my favorite genre to this day.

Who inspires you to write in your normal day life?

Honestly, I don’t know. I guess my youngest sister does. She reads anything that’s at her age level that I write. I think she’s read some of the books she’s allowed to read multiple times, in fact. Knowing that she’s waiting for an update and enjoys reading my work, and knowing that it inspires her to keep reading and writing herself, definitely encourages me to keep going.

What authors inspired you to write your own book?

Well, my roots for fantasy definitely go back to Tolkien. He was my first major exposure to high fantasy, and the things I took away from reading his work will go with me through the rest of my writing career. But the most obvious influence is Brandon Sanderson. I’ve read a good chunk of his writing, and the Stormlight Archives in particular have heavily influenced me as a writer. He’s inspired me to reach for more with my world-building and my characterization by showing that it’s entirely possible to have both. I’ve striven to have that balance in Bane of Ashkarith wherever possible, and it’s shown in other works of mine as well. Obviously, I’m nowhere near Sanderson’s level of expertise on this, but just seeing that it could be done inspired me to write Bane of Ashkarith the way I did.

About the Author

Ariel Paiement is a fantasy author who writes the occasional historical fiction or science fiction novel. She enjoys all ranges of books and writing when it comes to reading, though fantasy and science fiction are her favorites. If asked what she spends most of her time doing, she’d tell you that she spends most of it reading or writing one thing or another. Her novel, Bane of Ashkarith, is coming out on July 31st and is the first in the Legends of Alcardia series.

THE DARKEST ROSE BOOK SPOTLIGHT: Laurel Black Blog Tour

THE BLACK ROSE COVERTHE DARKEST ROSE

‘He was about a head taller than I was. He was black, and had dark, caramel eyes. There were shadows underneath his eyes, with a sort of sorrow engraved within them. He was around my age, but something told me otherwise. It was his very presence that reminded me of something kind, compassionate, desperate.

He wore all black, so much so I thought he looked like the reaper. His hands were bound, just like mine, and though his head was supposed to be down, he knew I was there. There was something animalistic about him, something I couldn’t help but be enticed by. And it snapped me out of my hunger.

“Do you know me?” was the first thing I heard.’

Nathan is a resident at Blackwell, a famous institution for the deranged, the criminally insane, and children with special powers. His job? Devour death row inmates on the day of their execution. This changes when he is kidnapped by a mysterious man named Damien, who says he knows Nathan from a life he neither wanted nor understood. In this chilling tale of love and loss, can Nathan overcome his demons and find the strength to move on, or will he be lost in the sorrow of his own sins?

DG Lamb: Guest Post

Please welcome, my special guest Sci-fi Author DG Lamb to my blog for this special Friday Author Spotlight. He has prepared an awesome guest post! Hope you all enjoy :).

~ World Building ~
The Bridge between Author and Reader

In fantasy and sci fi, world building is all about answering the question: What if? It is the answers to these questions of what if that are the girders of the bridge the reader must cross to enter the author’s imagined world. If there are too few girders or if they are poorly assembled, the bridge’s roadway, the surface on which the reader walks, will be shaky or uneven. The need to sufficiently think out and consistently apply the details of how a futuristic or magical world works creates one of the greatest challenges for the fantasy/sci fi writer. Why? Because the foundational answers to these what if questions are rarely directly referenced in the writing. Or, to continue the analogy, the structure of the bridge is mostly unseen.

For me, the original what if was: What if I was creating a Skinner Box in the future, having all of that advanced technology at my disposal, what would it be like? So, harkening back to your Intro to Psychology class, recall that B F Skinner was a behavioral psychologist who created an operant conditioning chamber in which rats would learn to press a lever to receive a food reward. I began thinking of all of the ways a futuristic room could supply positive and negative responses to the occupant’s behavior: varied lighting levels, colors, temperature, smells, the firmness of the floor – all sorts of ways to shape the person’s behavior. And thus, The Womb was born! But, so what? I had a fantastic room that could do all sorts of neat stuff, but it was just a single girder. So, I needed to answer some more what if questions.

I had to know what kind of society would want to create such a room. Well, we already know it has to be set in the future. But, what if there was a secret order of assassins who kidnapped children and molded them to fill their ranks of covert operators? Hmmm, seems unlikely that people wouldn’t notice that their children were disappearing. OK, what if Earth societies continued their competitive ways and after the discovery of FTL (faster than light) space travel, they so rapidly expanded outward that the space frontier became much like the old Wild West in America? What if law enforcement and governmental oversight lagged far behind this expansion, particularly in the American Sector, where private enterprises were allowed to establish settlements to support capitalist ventures? What if some of these “company colonies” were a bit more relaxed about funding social institutions, such as orphanages, and a significant number of children were left to fend for themselves? Who would notice if a few choice candidates were plucked from this planet or that colony? Wow! Now I have the beginnings of a system of connecting girders that supports the creation of The Womb.

Most of these elements of Joshua’s world are only indirectly referenced, if at all. For example, the fact that a Swedish ex-patriot in Norway discovered FTL travel is not even hinted at until well into the Driven to the Hilt series – the fifth book, in fact. But this girder permits the placement of a tiny tasty detail in The Deepest Cut (Book 1), as the topic for a paper Joshua had to write for his mother. For me, such details are the small sprinkling of spice that brings more flavor to the world, helping the story sparkle with life. Sometimes the need for girders is obvious. I knew I had to support the idea that someone as young as Joshua could survive what was to come. So I tried to establish a strong foundation with the core values instilled by his parents, his obvious intellect, his mother’s loving but unrelenting expectations that he do his best, his greater maturity secondary to being an only child, and his physical prowess and leadership skills by way of the stickball game, among other things. However, sometimes the missing girders wake me up in a cold sweat. For example, after I first wrote about Joshua retrieving Mom’s Fang from Muldavy, I just had him continuing on his way, fighting to survive the malignant attentions of the underbelly of New Cincinnati. But then it struck me, are you serious? Some kid is seen walking into town holding a creature in his hand that is so deadly, the fear of it has kept the colony out of The Swamp since its founding. And this would not get out? This would not make the news? Of course it would. But if such an issue is not addressed, perhaps the reader will not realize exactly what is wrong, but most will hear a hollow thump to their footsteps as they cross the bridge, an untruth that echoes from beneath, causing a dissatisfaction that lingers to the end of the book. And then they will say, “Yeah, that was a pretty good book, I guess.” They will not say, “Now that was a great read! I have to tell my friends about this.”

And so, the unheralded process of writing speculative fiction is supporting the world you create with a sufficient number of properly placed girders. I did this with a wide variety of topics: the weather that produces the permanent overcast of New Cincinnati, the extensive use of lab created foods, the way in which the bottom-line priorities of the sponsoring corporation shaped the colony. And the impact of each of these elements must be taken into account when writing about the people of the settlement. If you have considered all of these things, it will come through in both obvious and subtle aspects of your writing. The logical application of the rules of your world and the glimmers of fine details that you create provides that extra dimension, that rounding of the edges, that filling out of the characters, that makes a good story great.

If he can manage to escape these alien wilds, he will then have to brave the even darker dangers of the colony’s criminal underworld.

THE INTERVIEW!

Tell us a little bit about yourself and why you decided to become a writer?
I bleed ink. I know you’ve heard that before, but it’s true. If I’m not writing, I’m helping someone else who is writing. I love the author community, all of it, traditionally published or indie. I didn’t decide to become a writer until 2010 when I wrote the first word to my new blog, The Scoop on Poop. It was a humorous look at my daily living, which then belonged to 4 children, 2 of whom I inherited by marriage and were raised to hate me. Blogging introduced me to some writing circles, and that got me writing fiction regularly again. You see, when I was in 3rd or 4th grade, I discovered my love of writing (and my knack for it) with my first assignment based on a dancing peanut. I entertained ideas as a child about being the next Stephen King, but I also wanted to be an actress, a singer… anything that made me famous. My love of writing never quit though, and now I call myself a full time author. I also do content writing on the side to help pad the empty pockets us authors always seem to have.

What genres do you write?
While most of my published writing has taken a turn towards horror, I consider myself a speculative fiction author. I just made my debut into the world of fantasy with my short story titled Wings, a stand alone from the upcoming Destiny Defined series.

Where are you from? Does your area have a good writing community? Tell us about it.
I was born and raised in Virginia, outside of DC. The area I lived in had a growing writing community with some workshops and writing groups gathering at the local library branches, and the libraries offering author spotlights and book signings. The first local book fair happened two years ago. When I moved to Ohio this year, I noticed a huge difference. While I haven’t sought out writing groups, I have already joined in a local book fair with 3 more scheduled for this year. There’s a popular book store in Columbus that will sell my books and is known for regular author appearances. There seems to be much more for an author here in Ohio than there is in Virginia.

What do you do besides being a writer? Do you have a day job? Tell us a bit about this or hobbies you enjoy.
When I’m not writing, I’m promoting other authors, playing around in Photoshop, watching my son play football (go Titans!), or binge watching a beloved TV show. On the weekends, my husband and I can usually be found haunting flea markets and antique stores.

How often do you write? Do you have a page/word count? Do you set goals for yourself? Tell us a bit about your writing and how you keep things going.
After two years of focusing on the author community and other authors, I have to find my mojo again. I haven’t set word count goals. I’ve set “must get this book ready” deadlines instead and then stress myself out meeting them. Apparently I work best under pressure. I always thought that silence was the best way for me to focus and write, especially as an almost deaf writer, but recently discovered that the right soundtrack makes for really good writing and big word counts too.

How long does it take you to write a novel?
Well… Elven Games began in 2012. It still needs an ending. I have only completed one novel during NaNoWriMo. Destiny United sits at 54k words and is in need of serious revision. On the other hand, because I spent a lot of time answering writing prompts, I have folders full of short stories. Putting together a story collection can be done in 2 weeks to 30 days. Not sure that really answers the question. I’m cursed by procrastination and easily distracted.

What are your goals as an author? Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years? I don’t think that far ahead. Its a daily process for me, just getting to the next month with whatever plans I have going on. Right now, I have two live events in October, this book blog tour for the release of one book, while celebrating the first book birthday of another. November is nice and quiet, but December has high hopes for the release of Elven Games and another book fair. Next year, I already have 4 events lined up, and plans to publish at least 2 more books.

What is the biggest obstacle you face as an author and what do you do to overcome it?
Procrastination is my biggest obstacle, closely followed by marketing. The first one I don’t have a solution to yet, but the second one I’m working on. No time like the present to try marketing tips.

What is the best writing advice you’ve ever received? Who was it from?
The best advice I ever received was to set myself up with the beginning to the next scene before I walk away from the story. This makes it so much easier for me to begin the next day. I don’t remember who told me that, but it stuck with me.

What is the worst writing advice you’ve ever received?
You have to grow lizard skin. No you don’t. Criticism can be given in a manner that is doesn’t have to sting so bad you need lizard skin to receive it. Everyone needs negative criticism to grow. It’s just all in the delivery.

What are you working on now? Do you have any upcoming releases we should watch for?
My newest release is October 26, the second collection of horror stories focused on the supernatural and paranormal. I’m working on Elven Games and having it released in December or January, and slowly inking away at that huge unfinished pile I have. I have started planning the 3rd collection for Halloween 2019 as well.

What are your current WIPs about?
They are fantasy. Tribba runs a B&B for her dwarven village. Her customers are going to the fancier elven castle next door instead. She challenges them to the Elven Games, in hopes to get rid of them once and for all.

Catching Dragons is the conclusion of Edgar’s story, the human who champions Tribba for her first two games. He must defeat the dragon queen Soren and save his kingdom.

The Destiny Defined trilogy follows River’s journey to collect five magical relics, connect them with their matching gemstones, then destroy them before Rtharo gains all his strength and takes them. It;s an epic fantasy series that happens in the world of Savania across several generations.

What do you have going on in the next 6 months? Can provide awesome author events, book releases, etc.
October 21 I’ll be doing an author meet and greet and signing at The Book Loft of German Village in Columbus.

In December, I have a local book fair where I’ll be signing books. I also hope to release Elven Games in late December or early January.

In late March, I’ll be in Lexington, KY for the Lexington Legendary Book Bash, and in April I’ll be at the Dayton Book Fair in Ohio. That’s all I have lined up for the next 6 months currently but that could change as I am always looking for new places to show my face.

Do you have any advice for other authors?
I do. I always like to share the whole start the next scene bit, but also, don’t be intimated by the blank page. It only takes one letter, one word to defeat it.

Do you have anything specific you’d like to say to your readers?
Without my readers, my stories wouldn’t be alive. Thank you for breathing life into my stories and making them real.

This interview is done and we have so much more to enjoy with this feature. In a few you will get a special sneak peek into Stephanie’s WIP Elven Games. This sneak peek will be unedited since it hasn’t begun its editing journey just yet. But, here is another fun excerpt for you from Stephanie’s up coming release, The 13: Tales of Macabre.

The 13 Macabre_ Never Never

WIP SNEAK PEEK: ELVEN GAMES

“What are you doing?” Edgar asked.
“Strange things have been afoot, so I’m making you a protection elixir.” Tribba said, the words rolling off her tongue distractedly.
“You do all this yet you need me to champion you?” Edgar said. His voice held a twinge of accusation. Perhaps he had strange dreams, too.
“Yes. See this book?” Tribba picked it up and waved it in front of him. It was the same book they used to banish the werewolves.
Edgar nodded.
“If I didn’t have this book, I wouldn’t…no, I couldn’t…be doing this now. I am not a magical dwarf. Every spell I’ve tried to concoct from imagination has backfired drastically. Hence I married a greeter dwarf and became a greeter myself.”
Edgar’s eyes widened at Tribba’s revelation. Suddenly, it became clear how Tribba understood him so well. She, too, had felt an embarrassment to her people. He walked around the kitchen and gathered both of her hands in his. When she turned to him, he looked straight into her eyes.
“Until this moment, I haven’t understood why you chose me and why you had so much faith in me. Thank you for sharing that with me. I won’t dwell on the past anymore and will embrace this challenge with all of my being. If you can believe in me, so can I.” His chest puffed out as he finished. “I am your champion and I will win.”
Tribba smiled in response to Edgar’s words. She had waited weeks to hear confidence in his voice. The timing was perfect as the games were scheduled to begin in a fortnight. She thought back briefly over the boy who had wandered to her front door and considered the man he had become almost overnight. Whether he won or lost no longer mattered. She knew she had played an important role in the future, whatever that may be. She had strengthened a man she knew would matter someday. She had instilled self worth in someone who would save the world someday. If that was her legacy to this life, she would die a complete, happy woman.
“Take your tunic off and turn around, Edgar. You mustn’t see what I am doing.
Edgar did as instructed, turning his back to her. She dipped her hands into the cauldron and let the liquid within cover her hands. She waved them in the air, faster than the eye could see. When she stepped away, the liquid soaked through Edgar’s tunic and dripped onto his boots.
Edgar turned around, a look of curiosity and apprehension on his face. “What did you do, Tribba? I suddenly feel…” He chewed his lower lip as he searched for the words, “…infallible, undefeatable, and incredibly brave. I feel as if I could slay a dozen dragons with my bare hands!”
Tribba merely smiled in response. “It’s time for breakfast. Let’s eat,” she said, skirting around his question with ease.

CASSTIEL BOOK SPOTLIGHT: Sheri-Lynn Marean Blog Tour

51eDLV6IzZL._SY346_CASSTIEL ~ Born of Lighting

Dragonkind ~ 52 Realms: Book 2

As an ancient immortal, bonded dragon shifter, Casstiel should have joined his soul mate Maya, when she was murdered ten years ago by the Ilyium; a vicious and powerful group of druid witches set on destroying all supernatural beings.
But with her last breath, Maya, aware that Casstiel was also tethered to another, severed their bond, and left him behind in the land of the living.
For ten years Casstiel extracts his vengeance against the Ilyium, all the while blaming fate, along with another.
A female, and the one who kept him alive and unable to join Maya.
Casstiel lives in a haze of fury, neglecting his family, until he comes face to face with her.
Ashara.
He wants to hate her, and tries, but he quickly realizes she isn’t the enemy, but rather a victim as well.
Suddenly his protective instincts awakening, and he realizes what an ass he’s been.
However, he also finds himself fiercely attracted to her. Even worse, she opens his eyes and makes him question what it is he really wants.
Half human and half Fire-born, Ashara has never soared the skies or shifted into her dragon. Instead, she’s been held captive as a breeder for the Ilyium, heart breaking more each time they take a child from her.
Her only solace has been a connection to another that’s always kept her sane in a cold, harsh life.
When her daughter’s mate suddenly frees her from where her twisted son had been holding her captive, Ashara is happy. Until she’s confronted by a large, sexy male who scares the hell out of her.
Cass wants her to release him, and Ashara how no idea how.
But as her heart awakens to a love she never dreamed possible, she recognizes the bond, and while she struggles to find her place, unsure of her desires, she makes a shocking discovery. One that fills her with fear.
Now Ashara and Cass have decisions to make, though they may not be what anyone wants.

After reading this synopsis I was sold. I mean I’m already a big dragon lover and books featuring dragons are an easy sell on me. However, this synopsis is plain eye candy and makes me drool for more. So, CASSTIEL welcome to my TBR list and Sheri-Lynn looking forward to sinking my teeth into this awesome looking book. Great work.
If your still needing more inspiration to get you to snatch up this dragon book then keep reading. I have a special excerpt below to spark your interest and hope it gets you to push that pretty link to your favorite online store to purchase. Hang on to your hats ladies and gents! We are going into the world of awesome!

EXCERPT

Ashara stood frozen, eyes lowered like prey that’s been caught by a predator.
“Release me,” he repeated.
“Cass, leave her alone,” Zales said telepathically, sounding weary.
“She’s the one,” Cass said. “I need her to sever this bond between us.”
“Maybe, but you scare her, and it’s been a long night,” Zales said with his eyes closed.
With a frustrated snarl, Cass went and sat at the opposite end of the couch from him.
He was so bloody tired. For so long, he’d dreamed of finding the one holding him to life. He’d plotted his revenge, imagining what he would do once he finally found her. He would make her pay, make her hurt, just like he hurt. Then he’d break their connection and send her to hell. It had been all that kept him alive for the last ten years.
But now, he couldn’t do it. No matter what he wanted to believe, she wasn’t some evil sorceress and she looked like she could be blown over by a stiff breeze.
Ashara cautiously at back down on the love seat across from him.
Cass’s body filled with need, making him want to swear. He hated his reaction, along with the sudden desire to protect her. Then there was the pain in her eyes, and her fear when she looked at him. She’d been a victim and that made him angry as well. He didn’t want to like her, desire her, or care at all. He had nothing left to give.
His thoughts turned to his mate Maya. How he wished to join her. Yet as he closed his eyes, Ashara filled his mind. He imagined her naked and under him. Cass let out a low growl and adjusted his position.
As the others in the room slept. Cass looked at Ashara who was curled into a tight ball. Every now and then she’d give a little shiver, and even with her eyes closed, she looked bruised and worn-out. All of a sudden, something in Cass softened.
Zales’s voice filled his head. “Saber rescued her from Darry Caverns where her son, Commander Casin, kept her prisoner.”
Her own son did that to her?
When Zales was once again asleep, Cass rose, but as he started past Ashara, he paused. Then he grabbed the blanket off the couch and gently covered her.
Satisfied, he made his way over to the tunnel and walked through the waterfall until he stood outside.
He glanced up at the rock wall towering behind him, then down at the placid lake over five-hundred-feet below. Despite the sharp white spears rising from the water, it appeared so calm, and completely opposite of his churning emotions. Finally, he gazed at the first of Tartaria’s suns breaking over the horizon. How long since he sat and watched a sunrise?
Thoughts back on Ashara, an unreasonable anger surged once again.
He shoved off the ledge. Power tingled throughout him as he rushed headlong toward the water far below, and he could feel that detested tether strengthening. It pulled, tugged, drew him, and pissed him off more. His dragon struggled for freedom, but he held the shift back.
The lake grew close fast, and he clearly saw the jagged white crystal shards projecting from the pale-blue surface. Sharp, deadly prongs. The pain would be brutal. And he wanted it. Needed it.
But suddenly, a white-hot bolt of lightning pierced him. His magic exploded and Cass howled as he shifted instantly. It wasn’t the result he was looking for, but the pain involved worked.
He roared, and rose into the sky, soaking up the energy that pierced his scaled body, bolt after bolt. Thunder boomed, though there wasn’t a single cloud in sight.

SHERI-LYNN MAREAN

Sheri M-15 - Copy - Copy

I fell in love with reading at age twelve when I read The Black Stallion series by Walter Farley. All these years, I have never stopped reading. No matter where I go, or what I do, I always have a book. One day in 2008, after we moved to the beautiful Creston Valley in British Columbia, I read a book with an ending I didn’t like. I don’t know what book it was, it didn’t stick with me as I almost tossed it out the window.

But that pushed me to write my own book. My own characters, doing what I wanted them to do. Vampires and Were-wolves were big, and while I love them, I love dragons too. Oh, so much! At the time, I’d never heard of dragon shifters, and I don’t really think of the Dracones as shifters, but more as immortals who can change into dragons.

I opened up a word doc and began to type. But life with young kids gets busy and it wasn’t until 2014 that I seriously got into it. My characters really came to life in my head and soon more joined them.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW w/ Lyndsey Rose Harper

Welcome back to my Friday Author Spotlight. Today, I’m sitting down with debut author, Lyndsey Rose Harper. Tomorrow her first book in her Evos Saga, “Clandestine” will hit Kindle Unlimited. Yes, you heard right her first book is hitting October 6, 2018. But that’s not all, she is also hosting a big release party over on Facebook. Being the awesome author she is, Lyndsey has a line-up of authors helping host her event.

LYNDSEYHARPER_2018_EVENTBANNERI’m one of those lucky authors, so come join us tomorrow to celebrate this new release! But, first lets get to know Lyndsey by asking her a few questions before we rush over to Facebook. 🙂

THE INTERVIEW!

Tell us a little bit about yourself and why you decided to become a writer?
I have been writing ever since I can remember. As a child, my next-door neighbor was the recipient of my earliest works, a newsletter about rabbits. Every month, I would write and compile a new newsletter for her. When my mom realized what I was doing, she provided me with notebooks and pencils. From there, stories of fairies and cats were born. I eventually transitioned into very early forms of fan fiction (pre-Internet days) of my favorite shows, then “official” fan fiction (on the Internet — because the Internet makes everything official), then into original crime-related stories. Now, my works involve the supernatural and speculative themes.

I don’t honestly know if I ever “decided to become” a writer. It was an extension of who I was, and who I am now. It was natural for me. As a kid, if I didn’t write, I wasn’t quite sure how to entertain myself. I loved reading comprehension, and would complete workbooks for leisure. I think writing (and possibly the Thug Life) chose me, to be honest. There was a long period of time where I resisted the idea of doing it professionally, but my mother always knew I’d end up here. And I can still hear her telling me, “I told you so!”

How often do you write? Do you have a page/word count? Do you set goals for yourself? Tell us a bit about your writing and how you keep things going.
I prefer to think of myself as a Spastic Writer. I’m not one who has a fancy app to keep track of words (wut r werdz). I suck at those cute little Instagram challenges that make you do something every day. And when I do write, I don’t really set goals. My days are usually wacky, my writing sessions unpredictable, and Netflix will always be my Achilles heel. TL;DR: Don’t model your writing life off of me. Or any part of your life, really.

How long does it take you to write a novel?
It honestly varies. I’ve written “books” in as short as a month’s time, and then some have taken over three years. “Clandestine” took approximately six months to produce the first draft, with over 60% of it written on my iPhone.

What are your goals as an author? Where do you see yourself in five years?
I’m honestly not the kind of person who can easily view myself a year into the future, let alone five. For my writing, I’d like to regularly sell books to people who enjoy them, and broaden my catalog into the double digits. It might be cool to know that someone wrote a fan fiction about my work (just no Fifty Shades stuff, please). Maybe attend a convention and sit on a panel with one of those little name plaque thingies. And hopefully I’ll have an updated computer by then.

Does your family support you in your writing, or are you on your own?
My family is extremely supportive, and I can never be grateful enough. My husband is a real trooper, and my daughter gives me encouragement to keep writing through her own love of reading. This book is dedicated to my late mother, who knew I would become a writer well before I did, and she remains my inspiration for my work.

Have you ever had a particularly harsh critique? How did you handle it?
My writing journey has been far from spotless. I’ve had pieces I’ve written torn (literally) up in front of me. When you work as a writer, you have a choice to make–develop a thick skin, or fail to learn from opportunities that are out there. Critiques are important to me. I value people who take the time to professionally review my work, and offer me their insight. As a writer, if you aren’t open to being wrong, or to outside suggestion, you will never grow in your craft. Criticism isn’t easy, but absolutely necessary in a writer’s career.

Do you write in first or third person, past or present tense, and why?
I tend to write in the third person, past tense. I’ve been told my writing style is very masculine, as well as more “cinematic” in structure. I like to pop around to show people what’s happening, without giving too much away.

Do you ever base your characters on people you know?
Oh hell yeah. People I know, people I don’t … the random lady in the grocery store, my co-workers, my friend’s friend, and people on Instagram (and more) have all inspired me.

Do you write about real life experiences, or does everything come from your imagination?
I like to write stories that are set in the present day with relatable experiences, but weaving in ideas of the fantastic or the unknown to make you second guess what you think is an ordinary part of life.

What was the biggest obstacle you faced while writing your latest book?
I only touched on it a little in this first book, but the series as a whole challenges me to write concepts that are so deeply ingrained into our culture into a completely fresh light. How I’ve chosen to portray things may make some people upset (traditionalists), which I struggled with at first. In the end, though, the story must be told.

Another interview down, but their is still fun to be had! You see that large banner up-top of this post? Go click it to be taken to the Release Party FB page! But wait! Before you leave lets see a juicy sneak peek from Lyndsey’s “Clandestine”.

EXCERPT: “CLANDESTINE”

Cara skidded to a stop, training her Glock on him. “H.P.D.! Get on the ground!” She held firm as she panted hard, trying to catch her breath as the man turned to her. Physically, he fit the description she received from Oleander’s neighbor. Tall, built, muscular. He had a thick head of shaggy chocolate hair that rustled in the whipping wind. His angular jaw was covered in dark stubble that crept up his cheeks. Still, she was unprepared for his blue eyes; they focused on hers with extraordinary vehemence. Even with the distance, ferocity radiated off of every part of his body, a fiery aura surrounding him.

Gritting her molars together, she stepped closer, her gun pointed at him. “Hands behind your head. On the ground.” She waited as he slowly complied, his eyes still trained on her until he laid on this stomach on the roof. The cold air whipped over Cara’s face as she watched him, her gloved hands tight on her weapon. “Lace your fingers,” she ordered, watching as he did what was asked.

“Try anything, and I’ll shoot.” She moved over him quickly, slapping her cuffs on him, one wrist at a time. He remained statuesque, his breath deep and even as she pulled him up to stand.

His eyes.

Up close, his stare was even more unsettling. It nearly felt like a personal violation, as if his gaze could excavate her very mind. He had no definitive smell, and despite how his body felt unnaturally warm, she suppressed a shiver from coming into contact with it. Her stomach sank as she studied him, sickened by a strange, unshakable feeling:

They were the eyes of someone she once knew.

Someone she once loved.

LYNDSEY ROSE HARPER

41317807_311633819611883_8098349677730070528_nLyndsey is a brilliant author you’ve never heard of, Superwife, and award-winning mother living life in jeggings in the expensive and overcrowded state of New Jersey. She is fluent in Spanglish and Sarcasm and enjoys watching Supernatural, Arrow, Psych, and The X-Files repeatedly.

You can find her either in the grocery store buying laundry detergent, Tylenol, and cat litter, hovering near her Keurig coffee brewer, or shaking her fist at the heavens in front of her computer. Occasionally, you may spot her on the beach or out shopping (when she actually has money to spare). However, you should avoid approaching her at such times as she is likely enjoying a rare moment of relaxation and can become moody if interrupted. If you decide to engage her during any one of these activities, approach with caution and a sizable cup of Starbucks in hand to avoid any ill effects.
