Saints and Curses

Welcome to another Saturday. Hope everyone is enjoying there weekend so far. Today I am featuring Alexis Lantgen’s book of short stories, ‘Saints and Curses’. She was nice enough to share a short sneak peek into one of the short stories that graces the interior of this awesome book. Check out ‘Grackle’ below…

An Excerpt

Grackle

20190811_130622(0)Jane wasn’t surprised when Michael pulled out his wand and brandished it at her. She had told him she wanted him to move out, and he could be volatile. After all, that’s why she wanted him to move out in the first place.
She’d come prepared. She’d chosen a restaurant known for its magical barriers and purchased a counterspell from the drugstore. The spell came with a potion that smelled like off-brand hand cream and a charm that looked like a refrigerator magnet. It had an inspirational slogan scrawled across it that read “Just believe in yourself and your dreams will materialize,” which was clearly written by someone who never remembered their dreams.
Nonetheless, the potion and the flimsy charm had given Jane enough confidence that she only stammered a little when she asked Michael to move out.
“I mean, neither of us is happy, right? It’s not about you, we’re just not good together, you know? Umm, I mean, you hate my friends, and the other day you called me boring.”
He’d said other things as well, things she found too painful to repeat out loud, but boring seemed damning enough. She plucked at her skirt beneath the table, then darted a glance in Michael’s direction to see how he was taking it.
He clenched his jaw, and he had gritted his teeth so hard she could hear them grinding. She stammered into a silence that stretched before her like an abyss.
Jane panicked. She wanted to take it all back, to tell him she didn’t mean it, that she was wrong, stupid. But his gaze weighed down on her until her tongue felt too heavy to move. A small, rebellious, suicidally stupid part of her wondered if she wanted to take it all back anyway.
When he pulled out his wand, she was relieved. That’s how it would be, then. But she had a spell he didn’t know about and he couldn’t do much in a restaurant anyway, could he? That’s why she’d chosen a public place, like her mother had always said.20190824_120742
The spell he shot at her blasted away her meager charm. The heat of it burned her face. She ducked beneath the table, scrambling away as their waitress drew her wand to settle things down. But Michael was quick. He hurled another spell at her, one hot enough to set off the sprinkler system and summon the security gargoyles. It hit Jane in the back of her knee, the one that never seemed the same after she’d twisted it freshman year.
A flash of light. Blinding pain. Then the disorienting feeling of being entirely the wrong size, and weight, and shape. She threw her hands up, but she didn’t have hands, only scraggly black wings.
Chaos surrounded her. One of the security gargoyles tackled Michael, snapping his wand in two. The police were called. The Magisterium was summoned. Jane flapped around the room. The people in the restaurant loomed over her like giants, hulking and terrifying. Some of them batted at her, shrieking. Others grabbed at her. One pulled out her tailfeather, which hurt. A breeze stirred around the room, and she saw an open window. She struggled towards it, flapping and hopping, but when she reached the windowsill, she hesitated and looked back.
“Even as a bird you’re ugly!” Michael yelled. “Fucking ugly ass grackle–I should have–” A gargoyle clamped its heavy clay hand over his mouth, or maybe punched him in the face; it was hard to tell what it intended. Jane looked out the window, felt the breeze under her wings, and glided away.
It’s not that she intended to stay a bird, forever cursed by her ex. But when she thought about going back to her and Michael’s tiny, overpriced apartment or to the dreary grey building where she worked, she couldn’t quite bring herself to do it. Especially when she thought about the enormous magical med bills she’d rack up to get back her human body. She’d have to file for bankruptcy or sell herself into thralldom. And the recent economic downturn had driven down the going rate for souls.

Character Interview with Skye from The Light Realm Series

Happy hump day to you! Today I am sitting down with Skye from Karen DuBose’s book series, ‘The Light Realm’. Please help me in welcoming her and hope you have fun getting know her ins and outs. Happy reading :).

The Interview

Who are you and what makes you great?
I’m Skye from The Light Realm Series. I don’t consider myself great. I get by like everyone else. Some people say I’m great because of the power I weld. But for me it’s a burden.

What is your soul purpose in life?
To bring back the balance of light and dark. If I don’t the dark will destroy our world.

What kind of adventures have you had that stay with you till this day?
I have been sheltered for most of my life. Everything I did was watched. I didn’t get to do anything until I ran away from the Coven that thought they could use me. The adventures we had to get to where we are now has been crazy. Between the Starborn Coven coming after us and the dark source. I’m suprized we made it to a safe place for now.

Do you have a love interest? If you do please tell us about him/her or why you don’t.
Yes! I found my bond mate. He was definitely not my choice, but I wouldn’t trade him for the world. Adrik is one of the people I was supposed to destroy to turn back the balance. The prophecy was all wrong.

Tell us about your journey you are on and how it has helped you grow as a person.
I still have to bring the balance back. I have never let it get to my head. I knew being born this powerful takes a lot of responsibility. In a way I grew up before my time. I didn’t get to do the things normal witches or humans got to do. Knowing all of this has changed me. Meeting Drik changed who I was. I think for the good. But our journey isn’t even close to being over. There is one person I have to take out. Arik’s father Zaryn. He is more powerful than we thought.

What kind of creatures do you see on a daily basis?
If you consider witches and warlocks with dark magic to be creatures, than I don’t see any.

Who do you look up too? Why?
I looked up to my mother until recently. She was a strong woman. At least at the time I thought she was. Something has changed in her after she found out Drik and I are soulmates.

If you had one thing about yourself that you would want to change what would it be?
I wish I could change my confidence. I lack a lot of it.

Who is your ultimate enemy? Why?
Zaryn is my ultimate enemy. He has been trying to kill me since birth. He is the reason the balance is off. Now that Drik and I are together, he is after his son to.

What should we expect from you in your coming book?
Hopefully I get the balance back and I can enjoy life with my family without hunting people down.

The Book

51XVzKQE61LSkye’s whole life she has been told she was the one to defeat the dark source. She took pride in getting rid of evil. Until the coven that has been her life tries to use her for their selfish ways.
Turning her back on them felt right at the time. Maybe she made a huge mistake, but she was never letting them use her.
Drik’s life has been nothing but fun and games. Spreading evil as much as he can. He knows there is a light witch that is destined to destroy him, but he has come up with a plan to change that destiny.
Will their souls handle what is destined for them or will they destroy each other any way they can?
Wherever her light goes, his darkness will follow.

Book Review: Wolf House

These books are an addiction I can’t shake. I didn’t realize how I was going to get wrapped up in this series when I snatched up book 1. Hard to believe that one freebie turned into a hungry to read the entire series. This isn’t the first time this has happened to me and I bet it won’t be my last. Check out my review below to see my thoughts on the fifth book in Tim O’Rourke’s Kiera Hudson Series One.

The Review

Kiera is free and back with Potter. But, Luke is still missing and Potter wanting to show his love for Kiera sets off to help find him. He is twisted up inside because nothing he does seems right in Kiera’s eyes. Potter falls back into old habits when he runs down memory lane.

A lycanthrope brings him back through his past to revisit the nightmare he lived in the Wolf House. Find out if Potter finds the murderer of the children in this adventure. Also, watch as Potter not only falls in love but rips the heart of Kiera at the same time. Who can she trust?

First off, I love this book. At first I didn’t understand the importance it had within the series. So far, all the books have been in Kiera’s POV. Then boom this book drops in front of me and it is all Potter. At first I didn’t see why it was even in the series. Yes, it would be a good book as a side novella but in the series?

Once I got to the end of this book, it was all laid out for me in black and white. This book ties into the series with such fine strings you have to follow along without hesitation. I had so many questions and it answered them all. Now the new problem is who is Elias Munn? Is it Potter? You will have to read to find out.

Question I had while reading this book:

What is the importance of Potter’s journey at the Wolf House?

Why does Potter do and say everything wrong?

Is he Elias Munn?

Where the heck is Luke?

And, why can’t Kiera make her choice on her man already?

Ranking: 4 out of 5 stars!

The Book

WOLF HOUSEWolf House

As Potter leaves Kiera and his friends to go in search of Luke, he makes a lonely journey across the snow-capped mountains of Cumbria. Haunted by the death of Murphy, the capture of Luke and the love that he feels for Kiera, Potter reflects on his past life and the disturbing events that took place at the Wolf House.

He remembers his first encounter with the werewolves, how he had to save Murphy and Luke, and capture the serial killer who was murdering the children from the town of Little Hope.

Excerpt

“Forty-four dead he’s responsible for. Forty-four, and ye say he doesn’t deserve to die? Did they deserve to die?” Allan stepped closer to her. Sadness made his face longer than it was.
“No, but he didn’t shoot them.”
Allan laughed. “How could ye know that? Ya weren’t there.”
She turned sad eyes on Kane. “My heart knows he’s innocent, and that’s good enough for me. I plan to marry that man tomorrow.”
“Without proof, what your heart knows is useless. He will hang tomorrow.”
“It’s not fair. You can’t dictate love.” She rolled tear-filled eyes at him. Her head shook as she sucked in her cheeks.
“You’ll lose your position as a Pinkerton detective if ya marry an outlaw.”
“I can’t help who I love.”
“Oh I agree, but just because ye love him doesn’t mean he’s good for you.”
“And who are you to say?” Her chin jutted forward.
Allan shook his head at her resolve. “My dear Claire. If it were anyone but him, ye’d have my blessings.”
Claire turned away defeated. “And what if he wasn’t a criminal?”
Allan laughed. He couldn’t imagine a world where Kane Shaw wasn’t a criminal. “Impossible, but okay. If he weren’t a criminal, I wouldn’t care. Ye could marry him on Sunday and divorce him on Friday, and it would mean little as long as ya did your job.”

Author Spotlight: Aurora Jean Alexander

It’s Saturday, the first Saturday in the school year here in Sioux City, IA. My nieces went back to school just yesterday, which I think is stupid. Who starts school on a Friday and then bam it’s the weekend. Makes no sense. Well, anyway today I am giving over my blog to Paranormal Romance and Fantasy author Aurora Jean Alexander. She is going to talk about her current series in the works and her lovely kitties. Hope you have an awesome read…

I am Aurora Jean Alexander, AJ in short. I’m an author who recently published her 2nd book in ‘The Council Of Twelve’ series, Sundance.
I was quite young when I discovered I wanted to write. I doubt I can tell you one specific time or even time frame when I started writing. I felt that’s what I wanted to do. Since I lack talent in painting and drawing, I had to do something with my creativity and decided that’s the way to do it.
68377702_2339389279443846_8674632992049594368_nI’m not sure there ever was “a starting point” when I decided clearly, I wanted to be a writer. I learned to write at the age of four, and I remember developing little stories since I’m a Kindergarten kid. In school, when others complained about essays, mine were easily 6 – 10 pages long, I enjoyed it so much. When I got older, the need to write deepened, and I became more serious. Finally, I worked myself ‘up’ to the point where I am now; writing a series of 13 books with the second in the series published.68946247_468887350625362_1246627791105949696_n
For a long time already, I felt fascinated by angels. Quite some time ago I asked myself if angels would ever fall in love. And here, the basic idea for ‘The Council Of Twelve’ series was born. Of course, I needed to add a bit more to the story than ‘only’ love. And that’s what I tried to do.
Next, to being a writer, I’m also a cat mommy. At my place there are three beautiful Maine Coon cats, one of them a tomcat and two females. I call them my ‘assistants.’ They all are gorgeous, of course, and each one of them has a fairly unique personality. I love talking about my cats. Jake is a rare golden tabby with white. He is a breathtaking ‘tiger’ with huge paws, and the sweetest personality one can imagine. He is very soft and caring. When I got him I had a tiny black Persian, and he used to play with her. Even though it looked quite rough he never hurt her. And when she got sick, shortly before I had to euthanize her, she couldn’t wash anymore, and Jake helped her.
69232551_928840687470777_998835451169079296_nCharlet is the one I got after the Persian passed away. She is a Maine Coon black-tabby and has the cutest face one can imagine, surrounded by a black line like it would frame her little face. She is quite small for a Maine Coon cat, but she stood her ground quite well and showed Jake that he could not do with her whatever he liked. She is a very mommy-oriented cat and loves to cuddle and curl up on my desk.
Tjara is a beautiful black Maine Coon cat. She is a former ‘best of show’ cat. I got her after she was retired from breeding. That is how I got all my cats. Each one was already grown up when I provided them with a forever home. Tjara is a very self-confident cat. When I brought her in, it took her about half an hour, and she took the job as a ‘pack leader.’ She is proud and strong, and very elegant. With her I have my own personal mini-Panther.
Each one of them is dear to my heart and enriches my life in an indescribable way. My writing is a major part of my life, and my cats are the other major part. I’m happy for every new reader of my books, and so are my assistants. (They get treats when I celebrate new readers.)

Author Interview with Fantasy Author Richard H. Stephens

Happy Friday everyone! Hope you have a great day to start off your weekend. Today I am sitting down with Fantasy author Richard H. Stephens. We are going to get to know him and his books. So hang for the ride and lets get things going…

The Interview

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I started writing when I was 9. I began writing Soul Forge, my first epic fantasy story when I was 17, but never published it until I was 53.

What genre do you write in? Why?

I write epic fantasy because that is the genre I enjoy reading most. I love the freedom it gives you and the scope of imagination you can use to create eclectic characters, fantastical creatures and wondrous landscapes.

What does your daily life look like? What do you wish it was like?

I get up around 6am and check in on social media while I have a coffee and breakfast. Afterward, I will then fill out any outstanding interviews such as this one and follow that by editing the words I wrote yesterday. When the edits are done, I will go for a walk before settling into the day’s writing. I’m not a fast writer, so I generally strive for 2,000 words a day average. Some days I get over 3,000 while others I manage only 500 or so.

Tell us about your latest release?

Reecah’s Gift, is the second book in my epic fantasy dragon series, Legends of the Lurker. In book 2, we see the main character, Reecah, come into her own, acknowledging her heritage and striving to improve herself so that she may take on the high king in a desperate attempt to save dragonkind from extinction.

What is your writing process like?

Plot? What’s a plot? I’m what some call a pantser. I have the main character put one foot in front of the other and we discover their world and their story together. I must say, I am just as surprised as my characters when something untoward happens.

Do you have any strange quarks you do while you write a book?

Not really. I am a pretty simple person. I enjoy eating PEZ candy while writing, if that counts.

What authors inspired you to write your own book?

Terry Brooks and Stephen R. Donaldson. Their worlds and characters are absolutely amazing.

Who is your biggest support system in your life?

My wife, Caroline. She doesn’t even like fantasy and yet she is the first one to read the first draft, helping me improve it and she is the last one to read the final draft, weeding out those relentless, soul sucking typos that always find a way through to the finished product.

What are you reading right now?

Archmage by R.A. Salvatore, and Transformation Protocol by Canadian science fiction author, David M. Kelly,

What should we expect from you in the coming months?
Reecah’s Legacy, book 3 in the trilogy is already several chapters in and is scheduled for release mid-December. After that, I already have 5 more books on tap that I hope to complete by the end of 2020.

The Author

AUTHORPICRichard began writing circa 1974, a bored child looking for something to do. As his reading horizons broadened, so did his writing.

Now, she is on the run from Odin and anyone following his commands, and she finds herself safe in the wastelands with the wild dragons, or so she thinks. Unless she can find a way to be accepted back into Valkyrie school and not be imprisoned, her future is in peril.

Author Spotlight: Debbie Manber Kupfer

Happy Hump Day! The week is halfway gone already. I thought today I would do an Author Spotlight on author Debbie Manber Kupfer. She is the author of the P.A.W.S. Saga. Check her out below.

debsprofileAt eight years old I turned into a ladybug. The story prompt in the Puffin Post said to choose a creature and write a story from its point of view. I spent days wandering around my house and garden in Barking, a working-class borough of London, peering into my dad’s magnifying shaving mirror and imagining my life as a tiny red, spotted crawling thing. Then I wrote that story and sent it off to the magazine and I waited.
Two months later I tore open the envelope that held my Puffin Post and scanned through the pages and there was my name in print – Deborah Manber. I’d got a mention for my ladybug story. And so it began: my love of words, of dreams, of stories (and as that first story involved me turning into an insect, I guess my love of shapeshifters started here too.)
As a child, I filled notebooks with tales. I wrote a series of school stories, based around the playground. I even remember the titles – Rodney and Me (about a large Old English Sheepdog that hung out around the school playground – the only dog I ever truly was comfortable with), The Day the Workmen Came (about when the playground was torn up and the equipment reminded me of huge monsters breathing fire), and Parents Week (a week when we got to go out to work and our mums and dads sat in the classroom. I didn’t understand back then that the parents might actually have enjoyed the swap!)
Each time I wrote another tale, I escaped – escaped from the meanness that surrounded me in that playground, but back then I never put the bullies in my stories (that would come later when I wrote P.A.W.S.) My stories were my refuge and apart from that one tale I sent to the Puffin Post, I never shared them with anyone.
Over the years, I would continue writing. I wrote letters to an imaginary boyfriend in my teens. And as he was imaginary he wrote me beautiful letters back and sent me a handmade Valentine!
During college, I wrote bad poetry in a black bound notebook that I believe still sits in a box in my basement. Maybe someday the kids will clean out the basement and find the poetry and laugh at their mom.
It wasn’t until I went through cancer treatment back in 2011 that I finally started taking my writing seriously. I’d always thought I’d have all the time in the world to write once the kids were older. Cancer made me realize my mortality and I decided that if I really wanted to write a book I needed to do it now, so in November 2012 I tried NaNoWriMo and sat down and wrote the first draft of P.A.W.S. and the rest as we like to say is history.

The Lone Unicorn

JENKINS_2019_WB_BANNERIn a time of uncertainty life can have difficulties. Within the Forest of Ferrês lives a powerful being that the gods fear themselves. She holds the power to see the tides of time and experience the many outcomes our choices make. Her name is Esmé, and she is the lone unicorn.

Throughout the world’s creation she was the only one. Many don’t believe she even exists till she shows herself to those deserving. Those who have seen her believe her to be a beautiful elven maiden with a star-shaped birthmark on her forehead. Esmé takes this form because of the elven roots spread far and wide throughout the forest. She also does it to ease the troubled mind of her companion.

You will meet Esmé in my short story “The Assassin’s Prophecy.” But, most importantly she will play her hand throughout my upcoming series, The Legacy of the Silver Ryder. You will get to witness how the gods don’t hold as much sway on the world when she gets involved. Will she change the world by directing the choices of our heroes or will she bring the downfall of Tarzinëa?

Ask the Lone Unicorn your questions. Find out about special abilities, her past, or even her strange grumbly companion. You will only know the answers you seek by asking them.

Book Review: Red Eclipse

DISCLAIMER: THIS BOOK REVIEW FEATURES A BOOK WITH ADULT CONTENT NOT SUITABLE FOR ANYONE UNDER THE AGE OF 18. PLEASE BE ADVISED.

It’s week two of The Legend review series. We are now onto Red Eclipse. This is by far one of my favorites in this series so far. And, McKayla doesn’t disappoint by slacking on the sexy werewolves and witches. Check out my review provided below.

The Review

Alia is a witch on the run. She has a past that will come back to haunt her if she stays in one place for too long. But, when a man gets shot she has know choice but to help. Now putting the target on her back and an imprint bond with a man she doesn’t no, she finds her world turned upside down.

Olsen was shot. All he remembers is the smell of the woman who saved him and he knows she is his mate. He only has three days to find her but life tends to get in the way with being the second in command.

McKayla Schutt continues her series on strong legs. This book strengthens the world building book one started. She does a great job introducing two knew characters and makes you fall in love with the both of them. The love between these two is inspiring and keeps you turning the page. Highly recommend this book to anyone wanting sexy werewolves with a thing for witches.

Stars: 4 out of 5 Stars

Author Interview: Alexis Lantgen

It’s Sunday and the weekend is almost over. I thought I would help you deal with the idea of Monday being right around the corner with an author interview. Check out my fellow science fiction and fantasy author, Alexis Lantgen. Also, I got one of her collections of short stories featured below as well. Her book is on KU so if you have it go snatch it up for FREE. If you don’t have KU you can grab her collection of short stories for $2.99. Happy reading everyone :).

The Interview

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

I’m a writer, teacher, and classical musician. I love science, history, and just learning new things. I try to be creative everyday, and I try to be a good parent. I like cats, reading, taking long walks, and going to the park. I love camping and travel!

What genre do you write in? Why?

I write science fiction and fantasy because honestly, I like them more than other genres. I think they’re more fun and imaginative, and honestly just more enjoyable to read. I also love researching both science and history.

If you could change one thing about your life what would it be and why?

I think I’d choose a career that paid more, haha!

What is your writing process like?

Honestly? I write while my toddler’s napping. I also have weekly writing nights where I get together with other authors. Honestly, I just try to do the best I can with the time and energy I have in any given day.

Do you have any strange quirks you do while you write a book?

I don’t think so. I may be a little more absentminded, but I can be pretty absentminded anyway.

How did you come up with the story within your books? What inspired your creativity?

I think I’m inspired by science, history, nature, and just observing life. I love going for nice long walks in the evenings or taking the kids to a park in the afternoon. I get ideas from daydreaming, watching the world around me, or when I read a good book. When I’m writing scifi, I also look around for new discoveries.

Who inspires you to write in your normal day life?

I’ve had to be pretty self-motivated, but my friends Sarah Mensinga and Gerardo Delgadillo and the rest of my writing group have definitely helped a lot.

Who is your biggest support system in your life?

I think the love I get from my family–my husband, my children, my mother and sister, are the biggest support system I have. I have many great friends too.

What should we expect from you in the coming months?

I’m hopefully going to finish the first draft of a new book, though I have no idea when it will be ready to launch!

What is the one thing you want to say to your readers?

I hope they enjoy my books! I spent years writing the stories in both my books, and I really hope that they’re entertaining and engaging for readers.
